Re: Xp, Wifi and Modem difficulties.

Well it sounds all a bit confusing. You are trying to connect to your DSL modem with your laptop and it isn't recognized, yet when you plug in other things they do work. Then you mention that you are trying to search for your router and can't find it (I think) or anyone else's? I think that possibly people aren't understanding what kind of issue you're having other than a laptop you have can't access the internet.

First thing would be to explain carefully what you have on your network. Am I'm right in assuming you have a router? If so, you didn't mention it, but it would help to know what kind. Also would be helpful to understand what version of windows XP (home, pro, media center, sp1, sp2, sp3) you have. Also might be beneficial to know if it has ever worked and if it did work, what has changed since that time.

In short, help us help you.

Re: Xp, Wifi and Modem difficulties.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
  1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
  2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
  3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

I'd actually like to see a screen shot of Device Manager with the Network adapters section expanded.

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to TSG, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

Re: Xp, Wifi and Modem difficulties.

You need to uninstall all the drivers for the network adapters, both are shown in error, then reboot and install the drivers again.

Re: Xp, Wifi and Modem difficulties.

You need to download the drivers from the Gateway site. You'll have to use your exact model number and go to their support pages.
