[SOLVED] Cannot see network resources after WEP to WPA conversion
Hi all,
Another home network failing due to the unskilled being sucked in to the "wireless home network? It's a walk in the park," mire. I'm no IT expert but I thought I was savvy enough to make this work. Live and learn hey? Setup: Xp (Home SP3) ethernet connected to a D-link Wireless Router; NAS box ethernet connected to the router; Nokia N810 tablet wireless connected to the router. Pc and N810 can connect to the internet. Pc connects to the NAS. What I want to do is have the N810 connect to them both and transfer files etc. When I had the N810 connecting through WEP I had no probs in seeing the shared folders on the PC nor any probs connecting to the NAS and doing file transfers. But since I redid the security and set the N810 to WAP I cannot see the shared folders or NAS. The weird thing is I can use OpenVPN and VNC on the N810 and control my PC, but I cannot share files or folders. Likewise the PC cannot see the N810, even though it did before the WEP/WAP handover. What am I missing? I hope that all makes sense, any help would be much appreciated. Thanks |

Re: Cannot see network resources after WEP to WAP conversion
Well, I hope it's WPA and not WAP.
![]() There should be no difference between the two methods of encryption, assuming they devices are connecting at all. Encryption is done at the two lowest level of the OSI model and are strictly a link property of the Data Link Layer. The logical conversation on the network is independent of the encryption level, or lack of encryption.

Re: Cannot see network resources after WEP to WAP conversion
Hi Johnwill thanks for your speedy reply,
Yes I meant WPA (altho in my IT dyslexia I've always thunk it as WAP, it sounded better ) Is there a way to make everyone start calling it WAP?Failing that is there a way to change the thread title? Quote:
I was searching around and came across N810 WPA Howto and it was saying how WEP will use Ad-hoc and WPA will use Infrastructure. Will that have anything to do with it? Basically I'm at a loss, still haven't been able to see the shared drive and folders. I'll try returning to WEP to see if it works. Any ideas would be helpful, thanks greatly. |

Re: Cannot see network resources after WEP to WAP conversion
Have tried WEP and still cannot see the drives, so it has nothing to do with WLAN. Returned to the WPA settings.
Other things I was doing before I noticed this problem: Installing OpenVPN, VNC and openssh on N810; installing Openvpn, VNC and Nokia PC suite on xp. Help please somebody. |

Re: Cannot see network resources after WEP to WPA conversion
Actually, WEP works for both Ad-Hoc and Infrastructure connections, however WPA may not work with many environments using Ad-Hoc connections. If you have a router, you're using infrastructure connections, and this shouldn't be an issue.
I think you may be getting closer, now that you've mentioned a VPN. Roll back the environment to before the VPN installation, see if that gets things working again.

Re: Cannot see network resources after WEP to WPA conversion
Got it!
![]() Cheers for your input JohnWill, but I over looked my router (D-Link 615)! I had already installed openSSH on the N810. Installing Autoscan Network on the xp box showed the N810 only working through port 22 through SSH. So I opened my router on port 22 to the LAN (thru Virtual Server Settings - hope that doesn't mean it's open to the www{?} or some other security blunder). Everything works fine now! Many many thanks for your help Take care
