Slow connection

Hi, I work in a small computer store and recently we've been geting problem with slow connections.

There's about 8 pc's networked together so that all can access the accounting system but the internet is shared through the same connection.

I'll explain how its connected:

*Internet comes in through antenna situated on the roof
*Cable from router on roof comes to "server" pc in the building.
*The unique I.P's are set on the "server" pc (internet connection only needs a certain set of IP's to work. No username or password.
*Cable goes from "server" pc to switch inside building.
*Cables goes from switch to pc's or sometimes to a switch in a different part of the building and then to pc's.
*All pc's are set to automatically detect settings

The problem we get is that the pc's in different parts of the building get very slow internet even if we unplug these close to the router.

Would assigning all pc's IP's help in any way?
If i plug the internet straight into a router and config the router with the unique IP's would it speed up the internet?

Thanks in advance

Re: Slow connection

Static or dynamic IP addressing has nothing to do with this issue, and won't make any difference.

I'd be looking at the network infrastructure in the parts of the building that have the issue.

Re: Slow connection

Anywhere that's far is slow, doesn't matter what room. The other thing is that the person setting up the network configured it so that a cable from the first switch goes to a second switch in a different part of the building and then a cable from that switch goes to a third.

Its pc's running from this third switch that's so slow.

Re: Slow connection

There you go! I'm guessing I'd be looking at the cable between them, or the 3rd switch. In addition, when you daisy-chain a number of switches like that, you can run into problems.

A mis-wired cable that's only allowing 10mbit traffic, or is causing lots of packet loss would perfectly explain the slow response on the 3rd switch. Also, simply a bad switch would also fit here.

The right way to do this is to have more of a tree structure where the lines from the first switch would go to both the second and 3rd switches.

Personally, from this description, I'm betting on the cable or the switch being the problem.
