2 Modems on one DSL Line

Can this be done? I have a friend who has 2 different modems on her DSL line and was using both of those modems to give internet to 2 different laptops. I know this sounds weird but I told her that I've never heard of that before and thats whats probably causing the no internet connection issue. She was telling me that one lapotp would get knocked off the net if the other one tried to go on.

Re: 2 Modems on one DSL Line

Actually, I'd be amazed if she was able to do that, since DSL is specifically a 1:1 connection to the telco CO. In addition, a single DSL connection uses all the available bandwidth above the audio band that is reserved for POTS communications.

I don't know what she was smoking that day, but she didn't have two DSL modems on one telephone line.

You can use a dial-up V.90/92 modem and DSL on the same line, perhaps she's just confused.

Well this chick has no sense and I wouldn't be surprised if she used to modems on one line. I told her to go get herself a wireless router. I can't wait to see exactly what she got.

Re: 2 Modems on one DSL Line

She could connect two DSL modems to a single line, but she didn't "use" both of them while they were both connected, of that I can assure you!

Thats where her issue was. She used them both at the same time.

Sorry, but I'm just not buying this. DSL uses the entire available bandwidth of the line, there is no provision like cable modems to "share" the bandwidth of a single line. DSL is a point-to-point connection with exactly two end points. At the telco CO, there is a 1:1 relationship for your phone line to a connection. There is no way that two DSL modems connect to one phone line and both have a working connection, it plain doesn't work that way, and never has.

But I think this answers the question. Only ONE can be ON (ie logged in) at any single point in time. Then again people will argue what they believe in, regardless of the technical limitations that their claims defy.
