What in tarnation is wrong with my wireless internet?

I have no idea whats going on with my wireless internet. Ok here is the situation:

My laptop (Hp Pavilion if that matters) will connect to wireless networks where I go...but it wont stay that way. Sometimes it will be connected at 54 Mbps...sometimes 40 something...sometimes 1...and literally anywhere in between. It fluctuates as I sit there second to second. I've had swings as big as 54 Mbps to 1 Mbps within a second. This is tolerable but still a nuisance. What is REALLY annoying is that my wireless connection will just drop all together. But its not like its broken tho, I can re-enter the password to get on the network and it will connect right back. I just dont understand why it is so sporadic on every network I connect to, or how to fix it.

Any ideas? Thank you very much in advance for any help. Oh and if you need more info let me kno I apologize for not giving it right off the bat. Thank you again.

Well, I'd start by updating the wireless drivers to the latest available from HP's support site.

If that doesn't do it, you may have a bad wireless NIC.

And I'm sorry, what does NIC stand for?
