problem sharing files between wireless and ethernet connected computers

first, thanks in advance for your help.

my local network is comprised of a linksys wrt54g-tm router, an HP desktop, Linkstation external harddrive, and two laptop commuters. i have set-up and assigned each computer to local workgroup named M4NET and set up file and printer sharing on each machine. when connected to the internet via my motorola cable router and comcast isp, the ethernet connected devises are visible to each other and can share files as expected. likewise, the wireless connected devises can do the same (wireless ssid M4NET). however, i cannot share files or printers between ethernet and wireless connected devises. i have turned off all firewalls and at one point uninstalled all firewalls to make certain this was not the issue. most interesting, all the devices are accessible to each other and can share files and printing when i disconnect the cable modem and internet access. file and print sharing also works for the laptops when connected via ethernet adapter as opposed to wireless. it is worth noting that both laptops run atheros wireless adapters, an AR9281 and an AR5005G. below are the ipconfig /all details from the ethernet and wireless connected computers.

Re: problem sharing files between wireless and ethernet connected computers

You appear to have posted one IPCONFIG twice.

I'd like to see a bit more anyway. For EVERY computer, please do this, and identify the working and non-working ones.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands.

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

It is important to note that ethernet-connected devices can share files with each other; wireless-connected devises can share files with each other. However, ethernet cannot share with wireless unless I disconnect my cable modem and internet connection.

The other devises on my network are an external harddrive and laptop (unfortunately the laptop is at work).

Re: problem sharing files between wireless and ethernet connected computers

It sounds like the router is isolating the wireless and wired sections, though I see nothing in the specifications that say that it does.

Can you ping a wired computer from a wireless one by name, and then the other way?

Why is the base address at x.x.x.2 instead of the default? Have you tried resetting the router to factory defaults and reconfiguring just the wireless to get a connection?

Re: problem sharing files between wireless and ethernet connected computers

regarding the router address, i changed in an attempt to resolve the issue, which was present with all the defaults in place. i had read in another group to ensure consistency in the IP addresses and this change aligned the router and cable model as well as the DHCP clients.

Here's one problem!

C:\Users\Mark>ping HPMEDIA

Pinging HPMEDIA.hsd1.nh.comcast.net [208.67.217.132] with 32 bytes of data:
The computer name resolves to a public IP address! That's clearly wrong!

I see you're running OpenDNS, and this is an issue I've seen before with their DNS servers. Try allowing all the computers to run using the automatic DNS addresses from the ISP and not using OpenDNS.

Re: problem sharing files between wireless and ethernet connected computers

Thanks John. The same suffix gets appended to my computer name with the default DNS setting and OpenDNS setting. I switched to OpenDNS in an attempt to remove this Comcast DNS suffix which I suspected was causing the problem since all of the computers work together just fine when I disconnect the Comcast cable router and ISP connectivity from the network. I can revert back but the Comcast DNS suffix is appended either way. Any other ideas how to stop this routing?

Re: problem sharing files between wireless and ethernet connected computers

Please do this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

ROUTE PRINT

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: problem sharing files between wireless and ethernet connected computers

Let's go for a stack reset and post another IPCONFIG /ALL

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.

Start, All Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.
