Various Connection Problems
I am running a Windows XP Pro system with a LAN connection. I am having trouble with 2 specific connections. First I cannot use active FTP connections. I have worked around this problem by using passive FTP connections. My second problem is with AOL Instant Messenger. It will connect, but will not remain connected longer than 15 minutes, usually shorter (less than five). I have taken the following actions to solve my problem.
Removed/Repaired Spyware (Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Microsoft AntiSpyware). Completely uninstalled and reinstalled AIM (Current Version). Reset my network connections to default. Uninstalled the Current Version of AIM and Installed Version 5.2. Tried using other clients (Test Buddy, Trillian) Reset TCP/IP Stack Reset Windows Sockets Changed the AIM Port Setting Added the AIM Port to the exclusions list on Windows XP Firewall I really feel like the problem is port related, although I have exhausted my own knowledge. Any help would be appreciated. Note: Instant Messenger requires a continuous connection to the server. AOL does not provide support outside of their FAQ. I have finally resolved my connection problem. The Cisco VPN Client has a built-in firewall that is used to protect the secure connection to wherever it is connecting to. This was causing problems with both AIM and Active FTP connections. I simply uninstalled the client and things are now working properly. I hope this information can help anyone else experiencing this problem.
