How to set up router so I can access box from a remote location?
HI, please bare with me I am a novice...
I want to set up my router so I can run a httpd, sshd, ircd, ETC on an old computer running vmware (holding off on wiping drive clean but will eventually have only linux OS). As one already knows, the ip that is broadcasted on the internet is the same for all the computers in the house. So, my question is how can I make the router properly assign this computer an ip address? Also, will this be able to forward the proper ports? I was told to find the dns server the box is assigned to, and to use that to set up DHCP. I am using the standard wireless linksys router if that is any help to you. I also have another router that I do not use at all and it is not connected. If you all can not seem to answer this question, can you point me to popular network forum to do this? |

Re: How to set up router so I can access box from a remote location?
Get a DynamicDNS from here http://www.dyndns.com/ it is free, and can be used with a dynamic IP, you will create name for your IP in the linksys router you forward a port to the internal IP of the computer you want access to, also in the linksys you should have a setting for using a dynamic DNS which will update your external IP when ever it changes. I use this for a FTP server I run.
Also note that ISP's will block certian ports on dynamic IP's so you cannot run servers on them ie 80, 443, 21 so just use a different port for your application. |

Thanks man... I was looking at afraid.org's free dns; I'll take a look at this dydns site too.
edit: I found my router only take 2 ddns sites: dydns.org and tzo.com... Last edited by fordrew; 01-31-2009 at 08:54 AM. |

Re: How to set up router so I can access box from a remote location?
I recommend not using the router's utility to manage the DynDNS client, run the client on the PC. Many routers that have the dynamic DNS capability don't properly update on a schedule and free dynDNS accounts time out and go inactive.
I've been using DynDNS for years here, works very well with the PC client.
