Need Help with Ad-Hoc Network
My wireless router suddenly died and I need to set-up a means of getting a wireless Vista Laptop to connect to the internet using Internet Connection Sharing and my desktop's WMP300N wireless adapter.
My XP Desktop connects just fine, and Vista reports being connected to my Ad-Hoc netowork (I followed Microsoft's directions on how to set this up, and it appeared to be working during set-up), but the Vista laptop cannot connect to the internet. ICS is enabled on my XP Desktop, the Ad-Hoc network appears in WZC, and the Vista Laptop connects to it, but no joy on the internet. I suspect the problem is with my XP Desktop, as Vista did it's thing completely automatically. Couple questions: After setting up the Ad-Hoc Network, am I supposed to "connect" to it, as if were not actually part of my XP system ? Seems counter intuitive. If I do connect to the Ad-Hoc Network, the network appears in Vista's WZC, and if I don't connect my XP system, the Ad-Hoc network does not appear in Vista. I followed the Microsoft directions exactly, and it there was nothing unusal during the set-up, I just can't get the Vista machine to get out to the internet. Second, I have some question about encryption, etc... I took the most-basic WEP encryption, with a 5-digit password, and I am wondering if Vista demands something "higher" than this, and Could this be the cause of my trouble ? Any help appreciated, and thanks in advance. - Fren Last edited by Fren Banklin; 01-28-2009 at 09:10 AM. |

Re: Need Help with Ad-Hoc Network
Try starting with no encryption, since Vista sometimes trips over WEP encryption.
Also, please post this for each of the computers. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command: Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command. IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
