Cannot connect to internet with my GF computer.. when mine can.

I just received a brand new laptop from Dell and it can connect itself to internet without any problem. The thing is that for two weeks, my girlfriend tried to connect her computer (the exact same Dell as mine, a Inspiron 1525) to my Internet and it doesn't work. It's not a network, it's a simple modem-to-computer connection.

Anyone know what we're doing wrong? Is there a setting we should change in order to make her computer connect to the net?

Turn off the modem for 30 seconds whenever you change the attached device. Of course, a cheap broadband router solves this issue.
