Toshiba Satellite Pro A10 v ZyXEL P660HW problem

Hello,

I have recently acquired a Satellite Pro A10 (PSA15E-0115Q-EN) off a friend. It didn't have a wifi card fitted, but i managed to get hold of a Lucent MPC13A-20 which has been installed without any problems, and it is acknowledged as a Toshiba Wireless LAN Mini PCI Card. However, despite the computer being able to read my neighbours wifi (both next door and in the flat upstairs), it refuses to recognise my router, even if i'm in the same room. My router is a ZyXEL P-660HW-T1 v2, which is working fine (i have tested it with another laptop).

Can anyone please help!

Thanks in advance,
fred

The only thing that comes to mind is some standard things I do in this kind of situation.

Some things you can try here.
  1. For wireless connections, change the channel on the router, I like channels 1, 6, and 11 in the US.
  2. For wireless connections, try moving either the wireless router/AP or the wireless computer. Even a couple of feet will sometimes make a big difference.
  3. Update the firmware to the latest version available on the manufacturer's site.
  4. Reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure.
  5. Update the network drivers (wired and wireless) on your computer to the latest available.

Re: Toshiba Satellite Pro A10 v ZyXEL P660HW problem

John, you're a genius. I tried your first suggestion - changing the channel, and it's sorted. I was on channel 13 (unlucky for some?!), and have changed to channel 4 after sussing out that my neighbours are on channels 5 and 6. I initially couldn't connect, but changing the security from WPA to WEP resolved that problem.

Thanks for taking the time to help me.
Cheers,
fred

Glad we could help. FWIW, you may have better results if you try to get your channel as far away from other active channels. Here's a picture of channel overlap for the first 11 channels to give you an idea, note that only channels 1, 6, and 11 are totally not-overlapping. The farther you get from active channels, the better your results will be generally.
