DSL/Home Networking

I have a home network with a Cisco 677 DSL Router using NAT translations and my configuration looks like this.

------->DSL Router----->Hub------->3 PC's

One of the PC's is running Windows XP, the other two are running Win98. I share folders and files between all the PC's connected via the Hub. Am I vulnerable in any way to attacks from hackers because I have file and print sharing turned on? What should I do different? Please point me in the right direction.

thanks

Hi mpete! Welcome.

IMHO, you are slightly vulnerable. Your Cisco box protects you to a degree with NAT. However, that is all that is protecting you.

I would recommend a software firewall running on all three of your PC's. I use and recommend Zone Alarm. They have a free version.

HTH!

RE thanks

Thanks Pseudocyber! :compute:

Sounds like a good idea to me also. I was surfing one night when a WEB page came back and displayed all the folders on my laptop that I had shared. I couldn't understand how they did that. That's what stirred my interest. I was told by the phone company that provided the DSL router that I was secure with that router.

Go here, https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2, and run a port scan on your systems.

RE Again

Thanks again Pseudocyber!

Everything appeared Stealth. I guess I should ERR on the side of caution and not convince myself that everthing appears AOK.

If Zone Alarm is the answer, it certainly isn't going to cost me anything other than time.

thanks again.
