[SOLVED] I can connect to router but not internet
I can connect to a neighbors unsecured wireless network and get on internet. I can connect directly to modem and get on the internet. It says I have an excellent connection to my wireless network, can't get on internet, doesn't matter secure or unsecured network. I've tried 2 different wireless routers of different brands, same result. Tried connecting a cable from the router to computer, no difference(says its connected but can't get on internet)I've looked all over and tried several different things nothing has worked. I've looked in dozens of forums and got no real answer.
Could I have two bad routers? Could there be a problem with my modem connecting with router? Could it be an authorization or authentication thing? ***?!!!!! Any help would be much appreciated |

Re: I can connect to router but not internet
Let's start with some basic information.
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please. Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Make and exact model of the broadband modem. Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit). Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device. Connection type, wired or wireless. If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2) Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc. Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages. Can other wireless computers connect to the router? Are you SURE you don't have MAC filtering enabled on the router? Please post a screen shot of the router's wireless configuration page. To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to TSG, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here. On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this: Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt: Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key: PING 206.190.60.37 PING yahoo.com NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: I can connect to router but not internet
Let's start by getting a wired connection working. The default gateway of 192.168.1.11 is clearly odd, that's not the standard for that router.
Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on. The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.
When the computer is completely booted, let's see this. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key: IPCONFIG /ALL PING <computer_IP_address> PING <default_gateway_address> PING <dns_servers> PING 206.190.60.37 PING yahoo.com Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard. Paste the results in a message here. <computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. <default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. <dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: I can connect to router but not internet
I had Changed it to 192.168.1.11 to see if it made a difference, it didn't
I already tried a reset of the router with no results. I reset it again and here it is: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. Please check the name and try again. Still the same everything says its good but I can't get on the internet. Also, I tried to hook the modem up with my playstation3 and couldn't connect. I can get an ip address to pass the connection test but fails when it tries to test the internet connection. Almost like its doing the same thing. Could it be that the modem is not allowing the connection? I'm at a loss. I'm not an expert on computers or networking but I do know a thing or two and I'm stumped. Just trying to avoid buying new equipment. Thanks again for any help. |

Re: I can connect to router but not internet
Can we see a screen shot of the Status page for the router?
I assume if you connect directly to the modem with either computer you can connect? Remember to power cycle the modem whenever you change the attached device. If only one computer will connect, maybe the modem is locked to a specific connecting MAC address. If that's the case, try cloning that MAC address into the router, select the MAC Clone tab when you're in setup and clone the working PC's address.

Re: I can connect to router but not internet
Here's the screenshots
I clicked the clone MAC address button on the router setup but I couldn't tell if anything happened. Is there something else I'm supposed to do after that. If That was it, it didn't work either. Hope this helps. |
