Error 12029...maybe a new twist?

First, I am new to this forum and I hope to get the help I need here. Thanks in advance to all who contribute.

Second, I know my way around a computer but I am in now way an expert. Please be patient if I am a little slow on the up take.

My problem: My computer will not connect in any way to the internet (see hijack this and windows troubleshooting data below) with Error 12029 being thrown. I cannot get email (Outlook), internet (IE7) or any other app that needs to connect to run (Weather Clock, anyhting that needs to update online, etc...). I run Pure Networks Network Magic to monitor my home network and it sees nothing wrong. Network Places says that my everything is networked and firewalled (however, i disabled my firewall because a diag suggested that may be the problem). I have a wireless laptop and printer connected that I have no issues communicating back and forth with. The laptop connects to the internet with no issues (what I'm using now).

This all started when (against my own gut feeling) I tried to install Norton NIS 2009. I lost connectivity immediately during the install. The install never completed (it locked up) and I had to uninstall it several times. I'd shut down my rig because the installation froze everthing up. When I'd restart, the Norton uninstall program would auto-fire up. Upon restart after the unistall (i call bs), the NIS 2009 would begin to install again on its own. Wash, rinse, spin, repeat. Finally got it off, but still no internet. Did a system restore with no positive results. I've searched through a great deal of similar issues, but nothing that encompasses all my issues. I've fired up in safe mode, run spybot s&d, CCleaner, Spyware doctor, and Avira anti virus...updating all that I could by sneaker-net. My rig is as clean as i can get it. I've checked all my settings against the laptop and all appears well. I'm completely out of options short of a total system wipe and reinstall. Bah.

My rig connects directly to a Lynksys WRT54GS router and then to the cable modem. My laptop is wireless.

Here's the data:

Re: Error 12029...maybe a new twist?

First off, please uninstall Network Magic, as it will only cloud the issue and our recovery attempts.

Next, please run the following repair.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

Finally, let's get some details.

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router.
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

  • Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
  • If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key:

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Error 12029...maybe a new twist?

OK,

Uninstall Network Magic - done

TCP/IP stack repair options - done

ISP - Comcast
Broadand Modem make-model - Arris-TM402P/110 (Touchstone Telephony Modem)
Router make-model - Linksys-WRT54GS (Wireless-G Broadband Router 802.11G 2.4ghz) On the router status page the router is WRT54GSV4.

No other computers affected - all can connect and function as normal.
I've connected directly to my cable modem and still no internet connection.

When trying to connect I recieve the following error:
"Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"
Most likely causes:
- You are not connected to the internet
- The wbsite is encountering problems
- There might be a typing error in the address

When I try to diagnose the problem I recieve the following:
"Windows cannot connect to the internet using HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP. This is probably caused by firewall settings on this computer.

Check the firewall settings for the HTTP port (80), HTTPS port (443) and FTP port (21).

You might need to contact your ISP or the manufacturer of your firewall software."

I do not know how to check the specific ports setting on my firewall. I am using the Microsoft Firewall (at least when I checked it, it was showing as being on). I disabled it and still recieve the same error and cannot connect to the internet.

After PING in cmd prompt window I've copied the following text:

Also, I am running Windows XP Pro with SP 2 and 3 installed. This issue began while I was installing Norton NIS 2009. I lost internet connectivity during the installation. I know this because I run an app called Weather Clock which keeps an icon of the current weather in my system tray. During the installation that icon disappeared indicating indicating loss of internet connectivity.

I believe I've covered all the above questions and performed the required tasks. Thank you very much for your help with this matter and I look forward to any further help you can give.

Re: Error 12029...maybe a new twist?

I'd like you to uninstall NIS and then run the Norton Removal Tool. After that, do that stack repair I posted again, then see if you have better success.

FWIW, you have an Internet connection here, so it appears that a firewall component is the remaining issue that is preventing you from connecting.

Re: Error 12029...maybe a new twist?

...and the clouds parted and the angels were heard to sing...

I ran the Norton Removal tool and was able to immediately connect to the internet on restart. Thank you so much for your help. I will NEVER try to install anything from Norton ever again. Norton is the debil. Heh.

Thanks again.

Re: Error 12029...maybe a new twist?

Apparently, Norton NIS 2009 has some issues, there has been a lot of discussion here about them.
