Wireless Internet won't work when host computer is off

My current Internet in my house is setup as follows:

I have a Voyager ADSL wired router connected through its Ethernet port to a Linksys wireless g router. The ADSL router is connected to the downstairs(host) computer through USB, and the wireless router is connected to the internet port in the back of the computer through networking cable. Upstairs, in my bedroom I run the wireless internet using a belkin wireless adapter. I also run Xbox Live through this wireless connection too.

The problem I face, is that as soon as the downstairs computer is shut down at night, the wireless internet stops working. I have came to the conclusion that this is down to the fact that the Voyager is linked via USB and so as soon as the host computer is turned off then this will shut down the connection to the router. What baffles me further is that up until a couple of months ago this never seemed to be a problem, and even when the computer downstairs was turned off at night I was still able to browse the net upstairs in the comfort of my own bedroom.

Is there any way I can still use the Internet, with the host computer turned off?

Its worth noting that my computer upstairs can pick up the wireless network when the host computer is off, but I am unable to browse the Internet or use Xbox Live.

PLEASE HELP!!!as I have been unable to find the answer anywhere!!

Re: Wireless Internet won't work when host computer is off

Remove the USB connection and connect the computer to the router not the modem, problem solved.

Of course, the exact make/model of both of these units would be useful. Also, when you're connected with the USB cable to the main computer, please post the following.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Wireless Internet won't work when host computer is off

I am under the impression that I need the modem in order for the Internet to function and that if i remove the USB cable from this then the Internet will no longer work.

It is a BT Voyager ADSL Router, and the wireless router is a Linksys Wireless G Router WRT54GS

Basically the internet runs off the Voyager and the wireless router enables me to connect to the internet from my room. I have it connectyed as follows:

Voyager-USB-Computer
Voyager-Ethernet-Internet Port on Linksys
Voyager-DSL-Phone Line
Linksys-LAN-Computer

Hope this helps

Re: Wireless Internet won't work when host computer is off

You connect ALL the computers to the one router.

In your case, since the Voyager is also a router, you have an IP base address collision that is the basic issue.

You will have to configure the Linksys router's base address to not conflict with the Voyager, I suggest 192.168.2.1 as one that will work.

  • Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
  • Disconnect ALL connections to the modem first!
  • Connect the modem's Ethernet port to the router's WAN/Internet port.
  • Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
  • Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
  • Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
  • Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
