DNS Issues?

Usually there is something wrong with the DNS' not matching, but apparently all the DNS servers I attempt to connect to on one particular Dell Inspirion B130 do work, so I am a bit confused.

Well, all the computers on my small network work perfectly fine with the internet, and I am currently using the one Wired computer on the network. New computers with the network work perfectly fine as well, even including my XBOX 360.

I also can not resolve any IP adresses on a nearby wireless internet connection that had been used before from time to time.

So the problem is obviously with my own computer... but what exactly can be wrong? The TCP/IP settings are all set on automatic, and I already attempted to use a static IP adress.

My PCI card passes all of my Dell Wireless WLAN Card Utility Diagnoistics.

I have tried a couple of other things, but I can not recall alot of it, so I will be on responding ASAP.

A diagnoistic log from IE mentioned I have more than one Wireless Adapter.

Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller
Dell Wireless 1470 Dual Band WLAN Mini-PCI Card

and Hamachi, but thats a bit irrelavant. Trying to uninstall either of them is a bit difficult, as they reinstall themselves.

Windows Live's Troubleshooting showed the common issue of DNS and Key Ports.

So, I can connect to the internet using the IP Adresses, so it has to be DNS, but if you know the DNS is up, what can I do?

Re: DNS Issues?

You failed to really tell us much about the actual environment.

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

  • If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
  • For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
  • Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
  • If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key:

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: DNS Issues?

Name of your ISP: Atlantic Broadband
Make and model of the broadband modem: Motorola 585101 Surfboard
Make and model and hardware version of the router: Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router (2.4 GHz 802.11g)
Connection type: Wireless WEP
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines: XP SP3
The Internet Browser in use: IE7

  • If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?

    Tried with no luck.

  • For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?

The infected PC is not able to resolve IP's from encrypted or non-encrypted networks.

  • Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?

I have not, however due to all the other members of the network having no problem, I do not expect it to be any issue with router/modem

  • If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

    They function normally.

Re: DNS Issues?

You appear to have a good wireless connection to that machine.

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Hmm. I think this sort of restates the issue of my PC and resolving IP adresses? I am really at a loss to explain what is going on. If the network is ok, and my PCI card is ok, and my PC doesn't have any sort of freaky registry problem... what could it be?

Re: DNS Issues?

Well, It's either Hamachi, which occasionally affects the connection, or stack corruption. I'd uninstall Hamachi, then run this stack repair.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

Re: DNS Issues?

Hm, I have tried this stack repair before. The TCP/IP stack response always made me a bit worried, since I am used to things telling me what happened.

Point in case.

Sucessfully reset the Winsock Catalog.
You must restart the machine in order to complete the reset.

Does this look correct? The uninstallation did not help things much either. I am starting to get to the point where I just want to wipe my hard drive, but this is beginning to become a solid primer in networking troubleshooting,

Re: DNS Issues?

The stack repair results are normal. Microsoft doesn't believe in using a lot of words to describe what happened.

Let's try replacing your DNS server. Follow the instructions at OpenDNS for Windows and configure to use OpenDNS for your DNS server. See if that makes a difference.

Try repeating the PING tests I posted previously after configuring OpenDNS.

Re: DNS Issues?

Well, isn't OpenDNS just a public DNS server? I mean, now my network is using that DNS server (it is actually a little faster now) but I still can not get it to work out for me. Is the DNS suffix ever going to leave?

Re: DNS Issues?

Try booting in Safe Mode with Networking, connect using a wired connection, and run the ping tests again.

Re: DNS Issues?

I hate to disappoint, but I had a spur of madness and just trashed my partition. Apparently it was definitely something in the registry, because I seemed to be a ok afterwards.

I wish I could sort of replicate the situation in order to figure out what happened.

The help and troubleshooting was very understandable while not cutting too short on details. Thanks for running things through with me.

Re: DNS Issues?

That's the extreme solution, but I guess it's a solution.

Re: DNS Issues?

^^; I guess. I do feel a bit disappointed in myself about it. If it makes it any better, this has helped lean me towards a specific career path for IT. It seems Networking is a problem that can be found in any situation. It seems interesting and it has alot of things that can be branched into.

Can not wait to get my formal IT training going.

Re: DNS Issues?

Networking is certainly a wide-open field right now.
