[SOLVED] Trouble connecting to servers!

First I will start with my specs:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+(2.60Ghz)
2.00 GB Ram
GeForce 8400GS 256MB
Vista Home 32 bit
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alright I will try to explain my problem as best I can, but if you don't understand what I am saying or have any questions please let me know and I will try to answer them as best I can. For the most part my computer runs fine, probably not quite as fast as it did when i first got it, but that is to be expected. The internet works fine(how else would I make this message?), but when my computer tries to connect to things like game patchers, or the anti virus tries to update, it can't connect. Things like Battle.Net work fine, and I can run Steam, but I can't join dedicated servers. I can use the internet, but I can't connect to MMORPGs. I don't want to wipe my hard drive, and I am currently running a full computer scan with Fix-It Utilities 9 Pro, and maybe that will help, but I am not sure. I was using a router and that that maybe that was the problem, so I connect my computer straight to the cable modem, but nothing has changed. I have tried turning off my firewall, which didn't help either. I don't understand why some things work and some don't. Any help on this would be AMAZING!!

Thanks

Re: Trouble connecting to servers!

Hi Shroom,

Do you have problems browsing to some web pages and not others?

I'm sure Johnwill will have some good advice for you, but in the meantime you could have a look at the MTU setting on your network card.

Check this link here. Determine what the current MTU is and make a note of it (probably 1500), then work out the optimum and apply it.

If there is no improvement just follow the process and change it back to the original setting.

Re: Trouble connecting to servers!

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

  • If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
  • For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
  • Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
  • If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key:

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

You had asked for some specific error messages so I have two. The first one is from Fix-It Utilities when it tries to update:
"The following compnent(s):

Fix-It utililties 9 Professional:MergeCFG
Fix-It Utilities 9 Professional:HelperDDL

could not be checked for an update because the following occured:

[12029] - Cannont connect"

Also when I try to update a MMORPG called Perfect World I get this message:
"Update server connection fails
Please try other update server"

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Another interesting thing I found out last night as I was trying to fix the problem is this. For about a year the computer had Norton Anti-Virus on it, but a few months ago I got rid of it. I uninstalled it, and have been using other programs since then. I was looking at the Windows Security Alerts, and it said that I had multiple firewalls open. I looked at it, and it says that I have Norton's firewall running. I looked through all of my program files, but there is no Norton or Symetec(spelling?) folders, so I don't know how this is. It would make sense to me that it could be blocking other programs, but I don't know. Any help you have would be great!

Re: Trouble connecting to servers!

First, make sure that all things Norton are uninstalled from the Add/Remove programs menu.

Next try this Norton Removal Tool and then reboot.

See if that changes anything.
