Question A networking riddle

Server ip 19X.16X.X.32....sits as a file server on a workgroup peer to peer network...

XP machine hitting intermitantly....after two hours of BS I run the home network wizard and it hits...here the weird part...

if I ping 19X.16X.X.32 ...no reply

if I ping sever name ...replys at IP 19X.16X.X.33

and if I ping 19X.16X.X.33 it hits.... the server....

now all the other system can hit 19X.16X.X.32 not 19X.16X.X.33

the only diffrence is the machine in question is a IBM laptop....the others are desktops....

What netmask are you using? For 192.168.x.x you should be using 255.255.255.0. If you're using 255.255.255.224 the x.x.x.32 address is invalid. The other thing to look at is the IP on the modem if you've got one. Make sure it doesn't have an address assigned.

Subnet is the classic Class C =255.255.255.0 and there is no modem ...it is a workgroup enviorment and the gateway is 192.X.X.1... thanks for the thoughts though...

X= in place for security reasons

(you don't really need the X ... 192.168 is a private network address and isn't routeable over the internet. There are a LOT of peeps who use it ... )

When you pinged the name and got the wrong address what is supplying the translation? Are you running DNS on a PC in the group? Have you put the entries in the hosts file on the XP machine?

Also is this XP Home or Pro?
