1 PC, 1 laptop... 1 router to rull them all!?
My router: MSI RG60SE 108M
My PC runs Win XP pro SP2 My laptop runs Vista Home. My prob: I want to connect both computers to the router. I have 2 separate IPs from my ISP, and the way I made them work generated a problem. The router's DHCP sent IPs to my ISP's server, but that's because I made a bridge using 1 cable going from WAN into another free slot of the router. This made my internet work on both computers simultaneously. If I put the ISP cable into WAN, my PC won't work. If I put the ISP cable into another port my laptop won't. I hope it's clear... Please help me make the necessary adjustments to make LAN and WAN run together from my router. Thanks in advance! |

There is no way to use both IP addresses with any standard SOHO router. If you really need access to both of them and local networking, you're going to have to step up to a much more expensive router.
Why do you need two public IP addresses? Why not just use the router in the standard manner?

Re: 1 PC, 1 laptop... 1 router to rull them all!?
What is happening is the router is using one of your static address from the ISP when you connect it to the WAN port on the router. If you connect the ISP connection into one of the LAN (switch) ports and both computers into LAN ports you will be using the router as a basic switch.
Make sure that the WAN port does not have an address on it in the same subnet as your PCs and use the Gateway IP address supplied by the ISP for on your PCs gateway address. That way any traffic not ment for your other PC will be sent to the internet via the ISP's router. |

This is a bad idea, since now those machines are exposed directly to the ISP. If these are public IP addresses, there's no certainty that you'll have connectivity between them anyway.

My ISP told me that I need a 2nd IP because network sharing is not allowed in their politics (it's meant for blocking clients to give free net to friends or neighbors... since I don't have any limiters on my speed or traffic!). They have an automated bot that blocks a 2nd machine to share connections even VIA router.
I really have to make this work somehow, my folks are getting pissed, and want to switch firms. I don't though, I like it the way it is. Looking forward for any new suggestions from you. And happy holidays! :D |
