WD MyBook World II network drive..remote

i have one of these: 1TB
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=279

it comes with software from mionet. works ok but is a memory hog. I want to be able to access this HD remotely. I do not have a pc a connected to it. it plugs into my router directly. I was seeing if I would be able to map the network drive to my notebook so when im connected, ill have access. Any thoughts..thank you

ps: mionet is 8$/month

Re: WD MyBook World II network drive..remote

You don't need any software installed to just access this unit as a network disk, and you certainly don't have to pay a monthly fee! I have a number of NAS units connected to my network, I just access them as networked drives.

i didnt think i would have to pay for some thing like this. i think i have a way to do this. i need my router IP and my newtork drive ip. then just map it. does that sound close?

The NAS should appear as a networked drive. Browse using Network Places and find the drive.

Are you trying to access the remotely over the Internet? If so, you should configure the FTP server and access it that way. You do NOT want to allow file/print sharing directly over the Internet, that's a security hole you can drive a truck through!

Re: WD MyBook World II network drive..remote

I'm going to change my reply. I just read the manual for your drive, and it's pretty lame! You actually do need to install their software to use it, and I don't see any FTP option. I sure wouldn't want one of those pieces of junk with all the non-standard access!

Most NAS drives simply appear as a network disk and usually have an FTP server embedded. WD obviously had a Better Idea, but I think it's pretty lousy!

I saw the 3rd party hacks, but I was reluctant to recommend them. You still need an FTP server, to access it remotely.

Re: WD MyBook World II network drive..remote

SSH doesn't necessarily enable secure FTP, that would depend on the exact package you got to install SSH. SFTP will normally have plain FTP capability.

Re: WD MyBook World II network drive..remote

Note that WD has a peculiar idea of what hardware should do, and they prohibit remote access to many file types. Yes, you read that correctly. Here's one of many reviews from http://www.compusa.com/applications/...22130&csid=_21

SAD that WD would even offer this unit, pretending that 1000Mb connection would mean anything. Sooooo slooooow compared to any USB 1 or 2 connection external drive...takes hours for typical transfers from internal drive via the Ethernet connection. Media files are not accessible via internet connection as well due to their imposed DRM against your own videos!...again very SAD. do not buy this at any price.

REVIEW BY: Rikup Reviewed Dec 08, 2007

This NAS device will not let you share media files on your network. Western digital has taken it upon themselves to enforce copyright laws against people who buy their hardware. Google news about the device for full details, but do yourself a favor and buy from a manufacturer who doesn't assume their customers are criminals.
