Data from old PC to new PC
Hello people,
I have just set up a new PC running Win XP pro and would now like to transfer the files over from my old win xp home machine to the new one. Would like to do this via cable and the quickest way possible. Not really to fussed about buying extra equipment. Also need to transfer some of the programmes over. Any ideas? A step by step guide would be good as I'm a bit of a novice. |

Re: Data from old PC to new PC
Simplest way, using whats available, would be to link the 2 pc's up directly via network cable and use File & settings transfer wizard.
Then if u use Outlook, check where the pst file is stored and copy it over, then import the file into ur new pc's outlook. That covers the basics. As for the programs, u would need to re-install them. No easy way to just copy them, so i hope u have the installation cd's or files somewhere safe. Once you are done with the old pc, unplug the HDD and plug it direct into ur new pc temporarily to copy any other files u may want off ur old drive |

you cannot transfer programs, they need be be reinstalled.
If you have a home network, you can setup sharing between the computers and just copy the files you need over

Re: Data from old PC to new PC
If you plug the cable into the back of each PC (PC to PC) you'll need a cross-over cable. If you have a router or hub/switch you can just plug both computers into that without the cross-over cable.

Re: Data from old PC to new PC
Yeah crossover cable is needed... or if u have broadband internet check if ur broadband modem has built in router...some do. If you have spare cash a router is a good investment esp. wireless router which have support for wired access as well
