Suprised Cannot connect to internet [Moved from XP]

My HP NC8000 laptop is now failing to connect to the internet through both the port to plug in a cable directly, or through the wireless. I wiped the computer, reinstalled XP, and then the correct network drivers that use to work. It can see the different networks as it could before, but when I try to connect it fails to get an IP so I can't connect saying I have little or no connection.

Re: Cannot connect to internet

Does another computer work on the same connection/router ? Check with your ISP.

I'm moving you to the networking support section

Re: Cannot connect to internet [Moved from XP]

So there is a network section. Thanks, and yes there are a number of other computers connected to the same network, including the one which I am using.

Go to Start/Run and type in CMD, then IPCONFIG /ALL and copy and paste all of the information into the reply message.

Re: Cannot connect to internet [Moved from XP]

There's only the wireless adapter there, no wired adapter. Did you reinstall the chipset drivers ?
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...tem=ob-27038-1

Once a regular local network adapter shows in the network connections retry wired and see what ip you get.

When you right-click the wireless tray icon => show available wireless networks do you see the name of your internet connection ?

Go to control panel => network connections. Double-click your ethernet adapters => properties => select TCP/IP internet protocol in the general tab => click on properties and make sure the settings are set to obtain the IP address and DNS server automatically.

What security settings are set on the router ? WEP, WPA, MAC filtering ?

Have you tried to run the network setup wizard : start => accessories => communications.

Re: Cannot connect to internet [Moved from XP]

OKay, I installed chipset drivers, as well as the wired network connection's driver. And the Autoconfiguration IP address is 169.254.157.45.
Yes, I do see my network along with a few others when I view available wireless networks.
And I checked that the settings are set to obtain the IP address and DNS server automatically, and they are.
Currently, there is no security set on the network.
And yes, I have tried to run the network setup wizard to no avail.

Re: Cannot connect to internet [Moved from XP]

Restarting the modem I would think would be pointless since I know the network is working fine, after all I am using it to access the internet through this different PC.

Re: Cannot connect to internet [Moved from XP]

Any address starting with 169 is a local address. There's no default gateway in the ipconfig results meaning your network doesn't see the router. Connect your laptop to the router with an ethernet cable, restart the computer and see if you get the default gateway in ipconfig. You should be able to access the router by typing the gateway address in your browser (usually something like http://192.168.1.1/).

Restarting the modem/router won't hurt.

Re: Cannot connect to internet [Moved from XP]

Your network is only working on the other computers, the one not working isn't connecting to the router / modem. A restart of both will refresh your IP address.

Re: Cannot connect to internet [Moved from XP]

Your getting a169.... IP address because your computer is not communicating with the DHCP server. Try logging in to your wireless router and make sure that all your settings are correct, the best way to go it is to start from the beginning by reseting it and starting from there.

-"And the Autoconfiguration IP address is 169.254.157.45", did u configured ur router to give ip address starting with 169.... cuz private address dont work online

Re: Cannot connect to internet [Moved from XP]

If your network is good, which you state other computers are connected and can access the internet, your wi-fi, and ethernet card are showing as functioning in device mgr. Then it must be your routers config. You can access it through another known working computer by typing in the default gateway address. i would look for either MAC address filtering of 00-0C-F1-52-74-5C. Or if you don't have the router setup with to many customized settings, you can restore the default setting by using a paper clip or something similar, power down the router, and hold the reset button down while powering up the router.

Re: Cannot connect to internet [Moved from XP]

I don't see the broadcom driver you named listed on HP's website, you may have gotten the wrong driver.

I would uninstall all your ethernet adapters (preferably via add/remove programs if they're listed there, else right-click => uninstall them in the device manager), restart the computer and reinstall one driver at a time. Start with this one : http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...tem=ob-45860-1

Re: Cannot connect to internet [Moved from XP]

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
  1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
  2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
  3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?
