Network problems

Pliz assist me with the following.

I have got a workstation which cannot ping DNS, but the computer shows that its on network(hence, Local connection speed: 100.0 Mbps status icon in the right conner of the computer). The computer can't see other workstations on the network, neither can it browse the internet. Also other workstations can't see it, but the rest of the other worksations can see each other. If i try to ping the DNS, it times out.

The network structure is a workgroup connected to a 24 port switch.

Re: Network problems

You may want to check the IP settings first. From a CMD prompt type "ipconfig /all" and see if you have an IP address assigned and that it is proper for you network. You should be able to go to one of the working machines and do an ipconfig to get the proper network numbers to compare. If you have an address of 169.254.x.x assigned, that normally means that the you are set to obtain and IP address automatically (DHCP) and a DHCP server was not reached. As a test you may want to statically assign an IP address, mask, DNS, gateway addresses. Using a working machine as a base, the mask, DNS, and gateway settings can just be copied over, the IP address must be unique but still be in the network range.

Re: Network problems

Actually my network is a workgroup, there is no DHCP. The IP address is within the range of other workstations. I am putting the same DNS and gateway settings.
