My System

downloading at 70kb/s!!!

OR LESS!!

So, I realise I've got the worst router and USB adapter possible (belkin wireless G router, and belkin wireless G adapter), but even for that, it's running REALLY bad. So I've got it set to WEP, because WPA doesnt work for some strange reason. I've got a 128bit HEX pwd, it's running on channel 3, and my router is dowstairs, the adapter plugged into my new gaming PC upstairs. This is only temporary for maybe 3 months until I can get it hardwired. But I just got this gaming PC built, and I mainly got it for online stuff, so you can see why I need something good for those 3 months.

Now, when I go on COD4 multiplayer, sometimes it's OK, but other's it says connection interrupted for like 20 seconds until I get kicked. PLUS, I've been trying to download TF2 through steam. It's downloading anywhere between 40 and 150kb/s. So it takes about 10 minutes to get t 1% literally. Plus I will be wanting to install other steam games like portal, so it's important I get this fixed. I actually have no idea about my actual modem speed etc, though I guess it's around 8Megs.

Please help, and tell me how I can speed the download speed up, and make my connection faster in general...

thanks in advance :)

Re: downloading at 70kb/s!!!

Some things you can try here.
  1. For wireless connections, change the channel on the router, I like channels 1, 6, and 11 in the US.
  2. For wireless connections, try moving either the wireless router/AP or the wireless computer. Even a couple of feet will sometimes make a big difference.
  3. Update the firmware to the latest version available on the manufacturer's site.
  4. Reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure.

Many times these measures will resolve a lot of intermittent issues.
