"Limited no Connect...." one a DSL Wireless router
I have a laptop that I am trying to get to receive a Wireless DSL connection. Now I am pretty good with PCs, but if I had an Achilles heel it is defiantly Wireless networking, and then the DSL that is just Icing on the cake. (don't work with wireless much and DSL ever.) I am sure this is something I am overlooking due to my ignorance.
The Modem I am pretty sure that is being used is the "2701HG-E" which can be found http://2wire.com/index.php?p=106 It looks like the Modem and router are build into one but I might be wrong I am in the US. The modem in question is not located at my house so I couldn't tell you who the provider is. The wireless, encryption used is WEP It is a work laptop and not mine at that so I really don't know the make and model of it. I believe it is running Windows Xp Pro (guessing SP2 but honestly don't know and it could be 3) When first trying to connect to the wireless network a window popped up and asked for a few security questions and such. Like a name for the PC, and the network it sees. along with the security pass phrase. I entered in the correct password and all seemed to be looking good. I could see the network and it was telling me I had a strong signal. But I would get the "Limited or no connection" message anyways. It gave me a message mentioning something about the IP address. I cant remember exactly what is said. It something on the lines of unfamiliar, not recognized, invalid, or something like that. Sorry to be so vague. Now I have not tried a direct connect, but I am pretty sure it would work. The problem I don't think is with the Laptop. It connects perfectly fine at work and other PC's connect just fine to the modem threw the hard line. My current line of thought is that the security setting on the wireless part of the modem or only set up to recognize specific PC(s), and this laptop is not one of them. But before I went and messed with that I wanted to be sure that is there the problem was and not something obvious I am overlooking. Not to mention it isn't my modem so I don't want to change something I don't have to (I do have permission to do what needs to be done to get the laptop to connect though) There is 3 other PCs that connect atm to this modem. A desktop threw a hardline another Desktop threw Wireless connection (has no problems connecting) and another laptop also threw Wireless. Now I have been told the other laptop had problems connecting to the internet also for the first couple weeks then one day is just worked... Now that is all hearsay and don't know if it is reliable info but figured it couldn't hurt. at the moment that laptop connects just fine. Its just the new one what is being stubborn. Thanks in advance for all the help, Mike |
