how to set up wirless access point successfully?
hey guys
heres the deal. i have an ethernet socket in my room. in normal circumstances i just plug a ethernet cable from my laptop into the ethernet socket in the wall and wollah everything works fine. however i have just bought a NETGEAR DG934G wireless router, and what i have done now is... connected cable 1 coming from the ethernet socket into the wireless router port 1. then another cable going from port 2 to the laptop. so now the internet connection travels through the router. however heres the problem... on the router the wireless light is on. however when i pull out the cable from my laptop and try searching for a wireless network, i connect to it perfectly fine, but it only gives me local access, and not "local with internet" and i dont understand why? i am using windows vista and here is a screenshot of what i mean.. now what can i do, to get the internet wirelessly Last edited by stifler; 11-11-2008 at 10:59 AM. |

Re: how to set up wirless access point successfully?
Well, if you connected the router correctly, it would probably work better. You need to connect the incoming signal to the WAN port, and any output signals to the LAN ports.
If you don't want another NAT layer (the new router) in the mix. you might want to take a look at this configuration. Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together. Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration. Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc. Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes. Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router. Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc. Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected! This procedure bypasses the routing function (NAT layer) and configures the router as a switch (or wireless access point for wireless routers). For reference, here's a link to a Typical example config using a Netgear router

Re: how to set up wirless access point successfully?
hi JohnWill
i dont have 2 routers and would prefer not to fork another £50 on one. the other option you suggested doesnt work either, because when i connect to the WAN port, it doesnt detect an incoming broadband signal? it only works for phones. |

Re: how to set up wirless access point successfully?
Option 1 should work immediately. If it doesn't then you can always clone the MAC address of your laptop to the router and then it should work fine. Wall outlet -> WAN port of router and then LAN port -> laptop or wireless if it is setup correctly.

Perhaps you should try some of the suggestions before rejecting them out of hand.
