Network Problem: In dorm setup

Hello,

I live in a dorm room and am trying to setup a network to be able to coonect my computer to the internet as well as my ps3. The router is a Linksys and when we setup the router, the internet will not connect through the computer but it will detect the network, the same happens for the ps3, the ps3 will show the wireless network available, but will not connect when trying to connect. Can anyone help with this problem or show a step by step tutorial? I had a friend suggest a program called SMAC but it is not working. Thank you.

Re: Network Problem: In dorm setup

If SMAC was suggested to you, I'm assuming there's more than one computer hooked up to this network and one of which is actually working. If that's the case, it's possible your ISP limits/denies access based on MAC addresses. Your computer will need to mirror the MAC address of the working computer (SMAC it). If that resembles your situation, post back.

Otherwise... verify you have a signal to the router (the internet light is on)?
Open command prompt (windows key+R type in cmd)
@ the prompt type in ipconfig
do you show an IP (not 127.0.0.1), a subnet, and a default gateway?
@ the prompt type in ping 127.0.0.1 - what's the response?

Are you running DHCP(dynamic)? Make sure LAN settings are set to obtain IP and DNS servers automatically. http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-us/help/e070bf7b-6d5e-4f49-b4f7-10aa8d8b11e21033.mspx

I don't have the pleasure of a PS3 so I can't guide you through that.

Re: Network Problem: In dorm setup

With a single computer connected directly to the dorm connection, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Network Problem: In dorm setup

As far as using SMAC goes... talk to your RA or ISP and verify that they do indeed limit access based on MAC addresses. To mirror the MAC address... you would need to know which MAC address is logged. That would mean finding out which computer had access to the net from your room before you. Better to call and make sure that is the problem before trying to fix it.

Open command prompt once more and type in ping 4.2.2.2 - do you get a reply?
If so, go back into TCP/IPv4 properties ( http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-us/help/e070bf7b-6d5e-4f49-b4f7-10aa8d8b11e21033.mspx)

select Use the following DNS Server addresses:
for Preferred DNS Server: use 4 - 2 - 2 - 2 - click ok and test your browser.

Re: Network Problem: In dorm setup

First step is find out if your router is getting an internet IP address. Check on your status page of the router.

Re: Network Problem: In dorm setup

Connect that working computer to the router that has been reset to factory defaults. Clone the MAC address into the router, then connect the router's WAN port to the dorm network connection, and the LAN ports to the computers.
