Laptop fast at work, slow at home...
Ok, I've had this problem ever since moving back in my father's house. He has cable internet w/ wireless network. My work has Clearwire internet w/ wireless network also. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1521 (1.9Ghz/2GB RAM).
Now here's the strage thing... When I'm here at work, my laptop runs NORMAL. Like it should. I start it up, get on a couple IM programs, winamp, firefox w/ several tabs open and it's still fast. I watch a movie, download stuff, it's perfectly fine. Now when I'm home not only can I barely surf the net but even opening a folder on the desktop takes a good 10 seconds. Just logging in to the myspace home page takes a good 30 seconds. It's rediculous. And to watch a video off of my HD, forget about it. I've already looked in to temps but I'm actually running much hotter here at work. So... How come my whole laptop is so slow on the home network? I can see surfing the net being slow bc there are a few network drives my dad has hooked up, but wow. TIA!! (my first thread/post here!)

http://www/speakeasy/net/speedtest
http://www.speedtest.net Run a speed test at each location and report back the findings. Also how are you connected at work vs. home. Wired or wireless. Wireless B or G? I would assume the home network is slower than work. Probably have DSL at home?? Maybe there is also another problem as well, however, the speed test should give some initial insight to what is different between the networks. JamesO |

Re: Laptop fast at work, slow at home...
Ok, cool. I'm at work all night tonight but I'll take my lappy home in the morning and do a speed test there also.
I'm connected at both locations wirelessly. We're using a Linksys 2.4Ghz "Wireless-G" router at work. Unsure abt home. I have cable internet at home. It's very fast bc every once in a great while I can start up my laptop and have it run normal w/ cable internet and stream movies and such. |

Re: Laptop fast at work, slow at home...
Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.
The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like: If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different! and your IP will be disguised. Copy/paste that link here. Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.
