Network Problem Please Help

Hi
I have a DSL Home network through Bellsouth; In the beginning I connected the modem to a wireless router to a computer; This computer is running Win XP SP2; I have a couple more desktops in the house but I had to buy wireless adapters to connect them to the network. I decided to run cable to every room in the house so I could have Network throughout the entire house and I moved the modem and router from my office to the basement; I checked the patch cables to every room and they are working. I checked them with a laptop.
My problem is the computer I had connected to the router and modem originally, I can't get to acquire an IP address. I go to CMD IPCONFIG /ALL and I get this address:
IP Address 169.254.70.54
Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway 169.254.70.254
I guess this address is the default for the computer. I went to network connections and changed the ip address setting from automatic to manual but I got the same problem.
Also I reset netsh int ip reset reset.log and
netsh winsock reset catalog
but I got the same problem. Can anyone help me

Thanks a Lot

Re: Network Problem Please Help

Let's regroup.

It worked until you changed the configuration of the network, then it stopped working? First suspect here would be that you have a problem in either the wiring or the connections.

I'd take the machine next to the router and see if it still connects that way.

Re: Network Problem Please Help

I did that. I moved the computer down to the basement and connected it there but it is not working. I wired connected my laptop to the router and modem and it works. the same with the laptop connected straight to the modem; it works fine.
when I go to properties on the LAN of the computer affected, under advance it says:
"Windows cannot display properties of this connection. The Window Management Instrument (WMI) information might be corrupted. To connect this use system restore......"
I used System Restore but I can't get this computer to connect. Also the new network drop in my office is working fine; I have checked it a few time with my laptop; straight to the modem and also with the router as well.
A friend of mine told me to uninstall the network adapter and reinstall it but I know how to uninstall it but not how to install it back on. Please help

Re: Network Problem Please Help

The event log service is not running. Once turned on WMI runs. If event log wont run a repair or reinstall is necessary.

If event log is running the fix is rather simple. First be sure the windows management service is stopped. Open the command prompt and navigate to %systemroot%\system32\wbem\repository. Once in this folder del *.* and del FS. After a reboot the windows management is forced to create a new database clearing out the error.

Re: Network Problem Please Help

Open a command prompt.
  1. Unregister any WMI service (also known as WinMgmt) performance libraries by typing winmgmt /clearadap
  2. Stop all running copies of the WMI service by typing winmgmt /kill
  3. Unregister the WMI service by typing winmgmt /unregserver
  4. Register the WMI service by typing winmgmt /regserver
  5. Register any WMI service performance libraries by typing winmgmt /resyncperf

Reboot and see if that clears it up.
