wireless Adapter and Wireless Assistant not responding

Hi there - PLEASE HELP

My sons laptop a HP G6031EA worked well until he downloaded the SP 1 update for vista - then the fun began !!!!

No wireless networks are detected - the router works fine for the rest of us. The light on the wireless button is staying amber - no blue light. The diagnostics are saying that there is no network adapter installed or configured.

I used system restore back to when he completed the update ( I don't think it properly completed the download). I downloaded all the driver updates from HP for this model via my main PC and I managed to get the internet connection back - hooray ! Then I downloaded all the Windows updates which included the Service pack update for VIsta again (not realising until it was too late). The connection has now gone again, never to be seen again.

I don't think it is a hard ware problem as I have already got it back once.

I have tried everything I can think of:

System restore - now won't go back far enough

re-installied all drivers - all already exist, have saved over but still no difference.

Gone into BIOS to enable wireless connections - I think !

IPCONFIG command shows everything as disabled

Interestingly HP Wireless Assistant is not responding. I can not access the program, it is still listed but there doesn't seem to be anything there. I have tried to uninstall and re-install but it did not complete as the program is not listed for this exact model (not listed as a driver for the G6031EA) tried a similar HP model and it failed so I ended up doing a system restore to before I uninstalled so it is still not responding.

There is probably much more, but it is so late I have forgotten most of what I have done (nothing radical!) and I am racking my brains on this.

First off, connect this machine with a wired connection to the router for initial debugging.

Next, I'd like to see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.

1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

Let's see this as well.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Since my initial message, I had already wired the connection and I downloaded all the latest updates. The Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181) has failed to install correctly, as did the update for the Java Runtime Environment.

I have also tried to fix the HP Wireless Assistant. I tried a software repair and I also tried to uninstall and reinstall via the HP Recovery Manager and I still can't access the program.

Forgot to mention !

Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN is listed as a program in the control panel to uninstall but again I can't find it anywhere else to gain access not even properties.

Don't know whether I should be able to or whether its relevant but I thought I would mention it anyway.

Well, the fact that the wireless adapter doesn't show up in Device Manager is a bad sign. That indicates that Windows doesn't see the hardware at all. Hard to imagine SP1 caused that, that's a basic function.

Are you SURE the switch on the side of the unit is enabled for wireless access? If so, the next step would be to remove the laptop's battery, disconnect the power supply, and open the access door to the wireless adapter on the bottom. Check that it's firmly seated in the socket.

I have already tried the disconnecting the battery and checked the WLAN card, which is fitted just fine.

As I said, this has been going on for a while but on Saturday it all started working fine and then disappeared again, so I really didn't think the card had failed.

I have since found out that the Vista SP did not download successfully, probably because my son had TWO firewalls running - Comodo and Windows !!!! Can you believe that ! He claims to be computer savvy so I never thought to check.

Today I have downloaded Driver Detective and is is saying the following:

Out of date drivers
Nvidia Geforce Go 6100
Nvidia nforce Serial ATA Controller
Nvidia nforce Networking Controller
Nvidia PCI System Management
Nvidia nforce system management controller
Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN PCI bus 3, device 0, function 0 (which it is also saying is unplugged !!!)
No driver found for the data interface for the Broadcom.

I am still unable to access HP Wireless Assistant.

I am trying to download the relevant drivers for the above and it keeps saying that this software may not have installed correctly.

Broadcom is not shown in the device manager and I cannot find in search facility. I am having difficulty finding the driver for the Broadcom as I don't know / or know how to find the chipset number.

Any further help would be great.

Hi there johnwill,

After your last message yesterday, I decided as a last resort to restore to factory settings.

I got it back !!!!! I downloaded all of the microsoft updates successfully including Vista SP2. Wonderful.

Then I updated the security and restarted - it went again.

I've had enough. Its still under warrantly so they are collecting it Thursday by courier.
