[SOLVED] Network Bridge difficulties
Okay, I'm on a desktop connecting to a D-Link DI-624 wireless router through D-Link AirPlus DWL-G520 Wireless PCI Adapter. This is on a home network which has up to 8-10 total devices connected either by wire or wireless, at the most. The DI-624 Router is connected to a Westell Modem, Model Number A90-740110-06. I have recently gotten an Xbox 360, which is in the same room as the desktop mentioned above. I have read a bit into ICS and Network Bridge as methods to connect the Xbox to the internet, and have successfully connected with both, but I realize Network Bridge seems far superior, because it gives the Xbox full capability. The Xbox 360 is connected to the ethernet port on my comoputer by a cable. My problem is this: When I have the Network Bridge set up, upon connecting the Xbox, the DI-624 REBOOTS. Once it's connected, there are usually no connection outages during my game playing time, but every time I start up the Xbox, the router reboots. This is pretty annoying, since other people connected to the router (including my desktop) get their connection interrupted. Do you know why this happens whenever I turn on the Xbox? I can give any other information you need to help me with this.
Here are things I have tried and what happened. Dynamic DHCP on router; works as described above, just disconnects when I start up the 360. Static DHCP on router; once the network bridge was established I made static DHCP entries for my desktop and the xbox. This seems to have the same problems as before, then I tried only having static DHCP for the desktop and dynamic for the Xbox, and still the same. (That's how it is currently) I think I need static DHCP because I often run a trivia game from my computer that requires other users to connect, so I need to forward a port for it. So I think I need my desktop to be static DHCP. This is most of what I know but ask me anything you need to help. I appreciate it. |

Re: Network Bridge difficulties
I think I'd start with a firmware upgrade and a reset to factory defaults and reconfiguration of the router. This is certainly not normal operation! Nothing you do at the other end should force a router to reset.
FWIW, most D-Link routers have DHCP reservations by MAC address, so you can port forward while having DHCP for all the addresses.

Re: Network Bridge difficulties
Okay, even though I had the latest firmware, I redownloaded it and reinstalled it to the router. Then I found the page to do the port forwarding without attaching it to a specific IP, so I'm good up to that point (Thanks).
But now I tried turning on the Xbox 360 again, and the same thing happens. I kept refreshing the log of the router on my screen as I rebooted, and it first assigned DHCP to the new device that is connecting through the network bridge. But shortly after that (a few seconds) the router page stopped refreshing (the router rebooted). Then when I check the log it's like filling up with 100 instances of the following (or very similar, only the "port(xxxxx)" changes): Quote:
EDIT: One thing I just noticed, is the third line I quoted up there (which happens like 100 times in the log when it's restarting) is the MAC(00-22-68-a8-29-2a) is the MAC address of the Network Bridge which has 2 connections coming through it. (It shows two IPs both with the same MAC address) Quote:

Re: Network Bridge difficulties
Something is very odd about that XBOX. My son-in-law has an XBOX 360, and it sure doesn't reset his router, and nothing remotely resembling that appears in the router logs.

Re: Network Bridge difficulties
Also, don't know if this makes any impact, but this happens through a network bridge on both a Vista laptop and XP desktop so it wasn't just that one comptuer or OS. Maybe I'll just buy the darn wireless adapter for the Xbox.

Re: Network Bridge difficulties
What happens if you connect the XBOX directly to the router with a wire for a test?

Re: Network Bridge difficulties
Problem is resolved, I followed the steps to just make my D-Link router an access point and configure the whole network off the Westell router/modem...now the Xbox doesn't reboot the router every time and everything's working great.

Re: [SOLVED] Network Bridge difficulties
Strange, I wonder what causes that?
