Port Forwarding isn't working
I have a dsl modem connected to a router that shares the internet with both a wired PC and a wireless connection. My problem is that both the computers, for some reason, are not responding to port forwarding. I've done everything from guides on portforward.com, to testing regular ports on http://www.voipuser.org/port_forward_tester.html . Yes I've static Ip'ed myself and everything else. By rights everything should be working. I'm using a WRT54G and it's the cheap new model(ver 6 i believe). I've even tried their customer support (which was a huge waste) And I'm at my wits end. I would like to be able to host a game of Worms Armageddon. Any help would be extremely appreciated.

Re: Port Forwarding isn't working
What's the exact make/model of the modem you are using?

Re: Port Forwarding isn't working
Don't know if this is implied/obvious or not, but you might have to forward the ports on BOTH the modem and router (if you already know this then sorry). I couldn't get port forwarding to work for some time, until I realized I had to tell the one device to send those ports to the other device, and the 2nd device to send it to my computer.

Re: Port Forwarding isn't working
That would mean the modem is forwarding all ports to your COMPUTER, not to the router. Find the WAN IP address of the router and forward the modem's ports to that. Then the router will get it and give to you. On the modem you may be able to just select the router on a port forwarding screen or you may have to actually type the proper IP. The WAN IP address of the router will be different than the IP you log in to the router as, so look carefully for it. Also I think this is when your "modem" is actually a "modem/router," which it probably is, and you can access or "log in" to that.

That's a router, I asked about the modem.

Re: Port Forwarding isn't working
Ok, I found out I have a BEC 5200S . I don't know if there's any gui associated with that device. Their website didn't offer any help at all. Just for the record my modem connects to my router then my router to my pcs, the modem isn't plugged directly into my computer but you prob already knew that. Thanks so much for the help guys

Re: Port Forwarding isn't working
Found on a simple Google search: BEC 5200S is an easy to setup and manage yet economical pack of single Ethernet port ADSL2+ Modem/Router
This explains the port forwarding issue, you have another router in the mix. It took another 30 seconds to find the user's manual: http://www.bectechnologies.net/files/5200Series_UM.pdf

Re: Port Forwarding isn't working
Ok, I decided to give the "add route" option a chance. I have no idea what to fill out for some of the choices and the manual isn't helping. This is my ipconfig /all screen
Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : mike Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection 2: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Zonet 802.11g USB Pen_Drive Adapter #2 Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-B0-8C-04-59-28 Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.123 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.8.1 what do I fill out for: Destination IP Address IP Subnet Mask Gateway IP Address Metric Announced in RIP I tried Destination IP Address 192.168.1.123 IP Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 Gateway IP Address 192.168.1.1 Metric 5 Announced in RIP Yes but that didn't work This is all on my modem, my wrt54g is already configured to forward ports |

Re: Port Forwarding isn't working
Quote:
Let's regroup. You need to configure the port forwarding on the primary router, that think you call a modem. Then you can connect the Linksys as a WAP and disable it's routing capability. Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together. Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration. Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc. Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes. Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router. Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc. Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected! This procedure bypasses the routing function (NAT layer) and configures the router as a switch (or wireless access point for wireless routers). For reference, here's a link to a Typical example config using a Netgear router

Re: Port Forwarding isn't working
I'm not sure if I'm following all of your steps. Here's what I'm doing, I disable the DHCP server and save settings and that works, but then I change the IP and I'm trapped. My primary router is 192.168.8.1 with a dhcp range until 99 so I tried changing my wireless router to 192.168.8.101, save settings, and then I enter that into the address bar and it just won't connect. What am I doing wrong?

Re: Port Forwarding isn't working
Can't be too wrong if you're still able to post here...Do you mean you can't connect to the internet or you can't connect to the router after you've changed the IP? If you read carefully in johnwill's post above he pretty specifically says to change the IP of the router BEFORE disabling DHCP on it. I'm betting that's where you went wrong. Try again following those steps closely.
1. Change IP of wireless router to 192.168.8.101 2. Reconnect to wireless router (may have to reboot computer) 3. Disable DHCP on wireless router by connecting at the new IP 4. Connect a LAN port on "primary router" to LAN port on wireless router, leaving WAN unplugged After you're done with that the IP of your computer should be 192.168.8.x, and at this point you can configure the primary router to forward the ports you need to your computer. |
