WEP key problem

Can I actually assign an 8-digit WEP key for my Netgear wireless router?

Nope, WEP is only 10-hex(64bit) or 26-hex(128bit).
WPA, you might be able to make it only 8 chars long.

For WPA, which is a far superior encryption, I'd use at least a 20 character random key of letters and numbers.
