Win2000 changes passwd- never to be deciphered
I was trying to network my Win2000 to MacOS8.1 w/ crossover cable.
I had to install all network items on Win 2000 Celeron1800 PC. I then had to create passwd for Mac and PC. Never had passwd on Pc before, never online at all, no firewall, external contact whatsoever. After creating these passwds and failing to make connections for FTP with Mac client and PC host, my system would never allow reboot to admin or root level. UltimateBootCD failed to retrieve passwd. Nothing worked. Twice. A generic reboot with no ability to add software (no previlages) was all that was allowed. Twice.I had to wipe, reformat partition, reinstall fresh 2000 (repair kept the unavailable passwd in place). Now I do not try to network, and will not have any passwd (just as before the efforts to network my two types of home computers) What happened??? please no e-mail addresses in posts, it attracts spammers .. there is a method of e-mailing via PM or user profile thanks for your understanding (edited by D_F) Last edited by Done_Fishin; 10-28-2008 at 10:44 AM. Reason: removal of e-mail address |

Re: Win2000 changes passwd- never to be deciphered
Truthfully, I have no idea. I have to believe that something is being left out.

Re: Win2000 changes passwd- never to be deciphered
what I left out is:
The first time the password changed itself I was madly working back and forth from the Macintosh to the Win2000PC, trying all sorts of mac software items, each needing a password, ip address and etc. Then I had to wipe/reformat/reinstall the 2000. I got a crashed Toshiba Satellite w/ Vista, fixed it, and had to have a password to start it's new life. After a few days, riding a crest of success, and having absolutely no problem w/ the Vista and it's password, I FOOLISHLY put a password on my two separate boot partitions on the Win2000. BOTH never again let me in. I was sure I had it right. Vista was working. Vista is sill working. No lost password there. But my reinstalled wiped reformatted 2000s are password free, and not networked to the Macintosh. I wonder of it is a common problem???? |

Re: Win2000 changes passwd- never to be deciphered
Now . . .I was just thinking: suppose a manuf. in China built a PC board and a counterfeit processor with built-in "dial home" and "remote control" circuitry embedded.
They can sell it cheap and rely on it to relay it's location "home" when online. The trojan circuitry resets the password as it trys to "go online" to dial home. I bought a Matsonic MS9377C+ mainboard to replace a Matsonic MS9337 bare bones I bought cheap on ebay. It has never been online. Just a thought I awoke with yesterday. Last week or two Business Weekly publicized the counterfeit chip marketplace. RH |
