Cant stay connected to my internet

John,

I cant keep an internet connection on my laptop (wireless) and now all of a sudden my desktop is doing the same thing. I have replaced my router with a D-link DIR 655, and I am having the same issue but worse. It will connect to the internet at first, long enough for me to get a google page in IE, but beyond that I cant do anything. It says its connected, but I cant get to any other web pages or download my mail.

If i connect to someone else's (say the coffee shop) connection, I'm fine no problems, but not at home, I cant seem to get on line. I've had my local isp (Comcast) out to take a look at it, and they said there is something wrong with my network, but dont know what. I've spent numberous hours with D-link & they can only tell my there is something wrong with my puter.

I keep resetting my router and it doesnt resolve the problem. I have ping'd my ip addy's and they come back just fine.

Sometimes, but very rarely I can get on line for a little bit, but it doesnt last long. it will go away quite rapidly.

Also, my network connection boxes in the system tray, have often times said that I am not connected (red x over the top of gray boxes) & yet I will be online. I think its pretty confused as of this time, as well as I am.

I'm not sure if this is related, but my laptop will also not shut down to restart. I hangs up at the "shut down" and never shut down, i have to power it off so that it will restart.

I look foward to any advice you can give me,

Thank you,
Frazzled puter owner (thats ready to drop kick them out the door, and give up on technology) :)

Re: Cant stay connected to my internet

Update: I have updated all windows "Important" updates that were needed.

Also on a separate note, I am running Vista on my wireless laptop, and Xp on my desktop.

Re: Cant stay connected to my internet

Sounds like an environmental issue. Have you tried changing the router's wireless channel?

Some things you can try here.
  1. For wireless connections, change the channel on the router, I like channels 1, 6, and 11 in the US.
  2. For wireless connections, try moving either the wireless router/AP or the wireless computer. Even a couple of feet will sometimes make a big difference.
  3. Update the firmware to the latest version available on the manufacturer's site.
  4. Reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure.

Many times these measures will resolve a lot of intermittent issues.
