Problem with connection speed

When I run a speed test my download speed is shown at 768 KBPS, yet when I download a file, regardless of the website or program I use the download won't go above 90 KBPS. I'm running windows XP home edition, service pack 2 and I have comcast. Help, please.

Your speedtest is actually in kbps or kilobits per second
File download speeds are actually in kBps or kiloBytes per second, you need to multiply by 8 to obtain data transfer rate in kilobits per second.

90 kiloBytes X 8 = 720 kilobits per second

Downloads are also not always at your ISP connection speed due to many other factors and overhead.

You have no problems and your download is about as fast as you can ever expect.

Both of the speeds I referred to are kilobytes. I assumed this was the problem at first, but I contact my cable company and they confirmed my speed should be around the 700 kilobytes per second mark. The problem has only started recently, I've reached up to 1mbps in the past with the same connection.

I doubt the speed test is in Bytes.

Anyway, go to www.speakeasy.net/speedtest and run a speed test to the 2 nearest servers and post your information back here.

Run a route trace to google or yahoo as well and post this info back here.

Also if you are on cable modem service, obtain the signal levels from the modem if available as 192.168.100.1. What make & model cable modem do you have?

What speed service do you pay for. Some cable services offer lower speed value tiers such as 768 kbps or 1.5 mbps service.

I've never seen a speed test in bytes, they all quote the speed in bits.
