Connection on AIM, but not on IE or Firefox
Hello,
My friend contacted me last night via aim claiming that he can't access the internet at all, but he was able to communicate via AIM. He tried two different browsers, IE and Firefox. Both open but give him an error as if he wasnt connected to the internet. I told him to scan with AVG Anti - Virus and Ad-Aware. Both turned back a few low threat issues, but nothing out of the blue. I told him to open the cmd prompt and ping to google, and he is able to, and gets a ping of 112ms. Which means he has the internet connection, but cant see any pages. I then told him to do, ipconfig /release, ipconfig /flushdns, and ipconfig /renew. And yet it still doesn't work, we have tried restarting his PC, but no luck. Other family members have internet connection in the house, thus I elimated the router / modem being an issue. Any suggestions are great appreciated? |

Re: Connection on AIM, but not on IE or Firefox
This sounds like it could be an issue with antivirus software blocking these programs access to the internet. Instead of trying to change all the settings in your AV software, what might be easier, would be to attempt a system restore back to when it worked.(+1 day in past)
Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > "System Restore" Thanks

Re: Connection on AIM, but not on IE or Firefox
Thats a pretty good idea. When he checked his packets sent and received, they were porportional to each other, which would lean towards maybe somehow some settings in his anti virus got changed.
Any other suggestions? |
