Internet Connection Problem

Hi, I've been out of a internet connection for about two weeks now. The system is running via ethernet to microsoft base station to cable modem. I've already gone through a bunch of stuff with tetonbob over in the HijackThis section (HiJackThis Log, please help.) thinking that it was a sasserworm or something of the sort but that doesn't look to be the case. Anyone have any ideas?

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.




Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

• If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
• For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
• Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
• If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

I normally use a wireless system, most recently without encryption, but am now connected by ethernet chord.

Windows XP Home 5.1 (Build 2600) with SP2

I mainly use Firefox but I also use IE for sites that need it.

The computer in question is reading a good internet connection both through a wireless card and through ethernet but my browsers won't connect to any site. While I was going through a system cleaning with tetonbob I was able to connect to google using their IP address but couldn't stray away from there. The router seems to be working okay because my laptop's wireless still works and the computer i'm on now are connected to it too.

It sounds like DNS problems, sounds like your router is not picking up DNS server.
You could try changing the DNS setting in your network connections properties. Leave the first part as it is (obtain an IP address automatically) but change the DNS server to preferred 192.168.2.1 and alternate (any good DNS server address) e.g. 217.79.96.70
I assume you've made sure you don't have firewall issues ?

FWIW, I don't even see any wireless hardware in that IPCONFIG, is that disabled now?



Let's start with a stack reset, then try the ping of yahoo.com again.



TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.


Now try the ping tests again.

Yeah, I disabled the wireless. and the reset didn't work.

Did you try a direct connection to the cable modem bypassing the router for a test? Remember to turn off the power on the cable modem to change the attached device.

Connected directly to the cable modem, please try the ping tests again.


Try these simple tests.

Let's try replacing your DNS server. Follow the instructions at OpenDNS for Windows and configure to use OpenDNS for your DNS server. See if that makes a difference.

Did you ever try connecting directly to the cable modem? When I asked, you posted an IPCONFIG that still is connected to a router.

I did not because it required me to move the computer but I can try it.

I think that's the next test we need to do. Remember to turn off power to the cable modem anytime you change the attached device.
