[SOLVED] Not Acquiring IP Address Wirelessly from Netgear DG834N Router
HI guys,
I have sorted out the ethernet issue that I was having thanks to this forum, but the wireless is still ropey. The below details are from the ipconfig /all directive: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:\Documents and Settings\dave>ipconfig /all Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : CONTROL4QT Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcast IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 6: Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected Description . . . . . . . . . . . : TAP-Win32 Adapter V8 Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-FF-2B-68-1C-56 Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethe rnet NIC Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-16-36-17-FD-DB Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.4 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Tuesday, 9 September 2008 9:04:58 a. m. Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-14-A5-67-86-2F Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.242.231 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : C:\Documents and Settings\dave> I can see straight away that the subnet mask on the wireless attributes is different (ie wrong) from the ethernet connection, but I'm not too sure of how to resolve it. Any help greatly appreciated. Regards, Paul. |

Re: Not Acquiring IP Address Wirelessly from Netgear DG834N Router
I seem to have solved it.
It was something to do with the wireless secruity. I changed it from b + G to 170mbps, saved, and then back to the previous setting and re-did the WEP key security. Seems to have worked as I now have the following: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:\Documents and Settings\dave>ipconfig /all Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : CONTROL4QT Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcast IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 6: Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected Description . . . . . . . . . . . : TAP-Win32 Adapter V8 Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-FF-2B-68-1C-56 Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethe rnet NIC Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-16-36-17-FD-DB Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-14-A5-67-86-2F Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.5 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Tuesday, 9 September 2008 9:22:45 a. m. Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Friday, 12 September 2008 9:22:45 a. m. C:\Documents and Settings\dave> I also added my laptop to the trusted wireless station access list for good measure. All is gravy... I hope! |

Beautiful isn't it John?
Thing is I have no answer except a quirk of the Router... unless I installed uninstalled/changed something but I can't think what. Had to do the same again today after having given my laptop a spring clean. |

Some things you can try here.
Many times these measures will resolve a lot of intermittent issues.
