Ethernet does not work?

Ok guys this will be a challenge for you.

History:

I had an XP machine where the ethernet port worked fine, at some stage I had to change motherboards and it still worked fine. Then when I changed back to my old motherboard, the ethernet started acting strange...

Internet would usually not work, but after a couple of hours sometimes it would suddenly start working fine as if nothing had happened. I could even restart the machine and it would be fine. But should I unplug and replug the ethernet cable, suddenly it wouldn't work anymore, for at least a few hours.

I ruled out any hardware problems as I get perfect speeds of internet while its on, I also have a ethernet to USB adapter and when that is used, the internet always works.

As an extra to this story I cloned the XP hdd and moved it to another completely different (new) PC and got everything working, the only problem that exists is the Ethernet port that doesn't work on the new PC either, I havn't tested for same behaviour but i expect it will be the same.

For reference the Ethernet port in my older PC is some nvidia brand port and in the new PC it is a marvell brand port.

Should anyone have ANY idea how to fix this I will be very impressed.

New PC specs

ASUS P5E3 mobo
Intel Q6600
HD 4850 in crossfire
2GB DDR3 RAM

Old PC specs

A8N SLI SE (1st and 3rd mobo) Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 or similar (2nd mobo)
AMD Opteron 165
Geforce 7800GT
2GB DDR RAM

Re: Ethernet does not work?

Moving your copy of Windows between motherboards can introduce all kinds of issues, that appears to be your problem,

Re: Ethernet does not work?

How about doing a repair install from his Windows disk johnwill?

Also, just to make sure, you did install the new driver for the new mobo right?

Re: Ethernet does not work?

yes drivers were installed.

What doesn't make much sense, is that in packets sent/received, it shows packets being sent when I connect the port, but packets are rarely received, usually i only see packets received when restarting the router, but apart from that nothing really.

Re: Ethernet does not work?

I think the repair installation is probably a good idea, see if that helps.

How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install

Another thing to try is a stack reset.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

I'll give repair installation a go later, but I'd prefer not to as it takes a good few hours to sort out backups etc. I remember using repair installation before for a different issue a cpl years back and it killed my xp install.

resetting winsock/tcpip didn't do anything.

Is there any software to look exactly at what messages are sent/received from the ethernet port? That would be very useful and I could track down the problem better.

Re: Ethernet does not work?

WireShark is a good network sniffer.

Re: Ethernet does not work?

Ok heres a capture from WireShark from the start of when I plugged it in:

http://rapidshare.com/files/14417617...t_capture.pcap

What I think I see happening is that the Ethernet requesting to be assigned 1 IP (169.254.255.255), then the router is trying to assign the IP 80.4.17.38 and they do not agree. But it is very confusing because of all the IPv4 and IPv6 stuff going on.
