Internet Slow/Never Connects

Hi,

My wireless has been getting worser, and worser, day by day.

If I remember correctly, when i first got my computer it worked fine,
I could play Counter-Strike-Source no probems.

After aweek or two I installed Windows XP Pro SP2, (Updated to SP3 now).
I can't remember if I could play css when I frist installed but, I think i could tho.

Now, my wireless Disconnects all the time, and it's very slow.

Apprently.... The PlayStation3 connects to the internet no problem, also useing wireless plus
it's upstairs while my computer is about 5 meters away from router.

It never used to be this bad, i've also made more then 1 thread about it, but never got it resolved.

Network: BTHomeHub (Broadband)
Wireless Device: Belkin 802.11g - 54Mbps

My dads laptop wireless speed is 54Mbps, and can play a different game i can't.

Unplugged/plugged router
Sometimes that works, when it does its still slow, and it doesnt stay connected for very long.

If you need any more Infomation please ask.

Thanks.

Re: Internet Slow/Never Connects

First, I'd try connecting that computer with a wired connection to the router and see if it works properly. That will narrow it down to wireless issues or some other issue.

Re: Internet Slow/Never Connects

Well,

I've had it connected wired for 7 days, since my mom was on holiday.
Now shes back I had to move my PC back.

Wired worked fine, no lag, no disconnecting, always connected on startup.

First off, this is one problem. Making multiple threads tends to get many people, including me, to start ignoring them. If you stick to one thread for an issue, the help will be concentrated there. However, if you spread them around, you create more work for you and for us.

I'd start by upgrading the drivers to the latest version for the laptop wireless hardware. Then I'd do the following steps to see if they affect the wireless connection.

  1. For wireless connections, change the channel on the router, I like channels 1, 6, and 11 in the US.
  2. For wireless connections, try moving either the wireless router/AP or the wireless computer. Even a couple of feet will sometimes make a big difference.
  3. Update the firmware to the latest version available on the manufacturer's site.
  4. Reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure.

Many times these measures will resolve a lot of intermittent issues. Your issue appears to be wireless interference, so changing the channel is top of my list here.

Re: Internet Slow/Never Connects

1. My channel use to be 1, and I've just noticed that its 7. (Now my internet has been working for a day).

In case it happens again, how do I change channel?

It's still slow, so I'm going to try the others.

2. Moving the Router/My Computer isn't really an option I have, but... I do remember having my computer about 5 meters further away.
It was on Vista, I can't remember if XP worked where it was, I don't think I had it there.

3. My mom updated the Firmware, she said "I don't know if it updated or not" because it was meant to be scheduled for 9-11AM.

4. I'm not sure how to do that, so if you could explain I would be greatful.

Thanks.

Re: Internet Slow/Never Connects

You have to connect to the router's configuration pages using a wired connection to the router. It sounds like the channel setting is on automatic, I prefer picking the channel, since automatic doesn't always work well.

Re: Internet Slow/Never Connects

Sure, you have to access the router's configuration pages using that wired connection I talked about.
