Unpredictable partial internet crashes for (seemingly) no reason [Moved from XP]
Hi, this problem has confused me and everyones who's tried to help me solve it.
![]() My computer's internet randomly turns off every 30 to 60 minutes, and comes back after about an hour. The thing is, there is nothing wrong with my internet connection however. And every other computer in the house that is on the same network has internet that works just fine. Also, when the internet goes out, it only goes out partially. No websites load and pages like "Server cannot be found" on Mozilla or "Cannot load" on ie come up. No site will load. However, if I had a movie or video streaming BEFORE the internet mysteriously goes out, it KEEPS streaming and continues to load after the internet has gone out and other pages don't load. Also, chat's like Aol Instant Messenger also continues to work while the internet is down, as long as it was already on when internet crashed. If not, it does not connect. I've also found that certain sites make the internet go out, like facebook. About 10 seconds after navigating to the page, internet goes out. At first I just waited the hour until internet came back, but it got very annoying and it has become a real problem. No one seems to know whats wrong, so I'm hoping someone here can help me! |

Re: Unpredictable partial internet crashes for (seemingly) no reason
Hi csskkai and welcome to TSF !
If active connections don't fail but you can't surf websites anymore the problem could be with the DNS server. I'll move your thread to the networking support section. When you get "disconnected" go to start => run and type ping google.com then ping 72.14.207.99 If the first commands fails but the second succeeds then the issue is with the DNS. Contact your ISP to know what DNS servers they use and set their addresses manually in your network properties : start => run => ncpa.cpl. Right-click your network connection => properties. Select TCP/IP internet protocol and click properties to set the DNS servers manually. |

Re: Unpredictable partial internet crashes for (seemingly) no reason [Moved from XP]
Since it's only one computer that has the issue, I can't see this being an ISP issue.
When the Internet "goes out", please do this. Try these simple tests. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key: IPCONFIG PING <computer_IP_address> PING <default_gateway_address> PING 206.190.60.37 PING yahoo.com Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. <computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. <default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here. Another thing we can try. Let's try replacing your DNS server. Follow the instructions at OpenDNS for Windows and configure to use OpenDNS for your DNS server. See if that makes a difference.

Let's see a full IPCONFIG?
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command: Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command. IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Unpredictable partial internet crashes for (seemingly) no reason [Moved from XP]
This looks like a firewall issue, but first let's try this stack reset, then run the ping test I posted previously after the reboot.
TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3. Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands: Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands. Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog Reboot the machine.
