Good connection but Net acces not wrkg for IE & Fox

Hi. A newbie here so hope I'm posting in the correct area. Apologies also if this question is already posted somewhere...

I'm running XP and until a few weeks back could access I/N okay via wired or wireless, IE or Firefox. One day couldn't access net anymore in either IE or FF via either wired or wireless. First shut down firewall and AV but still no good. Brought up in safe mode and same - no access. When using wired or wireless seems like I have a good connection though.

From another post here related to this problem you asked for pings so I did. Screen capture follows here. Greatly appreciate anything you can do to help. I've spent many hours on this already.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.



After the reboot, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

Well, you're still having issues with the DNS server.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:

• Computer Browser
• DHCP Client
• DNS Client
• Network Connections
• Network Location Awareness
• Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
• Server
• TCP/IP Netbios helper
• Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).



Please tell me the exact make/model of the modem and router that you use. Have you tried connecting directly to the modem to see if that solves the issue? Are there any other computers connected to this router that work normally?

Checked all the services you noted and they are all started. All "automatic" except the 2 "network" services which are manual.

Have broadband access from Comcast using their RCA model DCM305 digital broadband modem. This is connected to a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router (WRT54G). Our other 3 PCs all successfully connect to the net via wire or wireless. This issue is limited only to this Gateway laptop which accessed the net fine for years until 2 months agp...

As you asked, just connected the PC directly to the modem with no luck. Opened the "connections" icon in tray and saw it was trying to connect but couldn't.

Anything else we can try?

Remember that you MUST power cycle the modem whenever you change the attached device, perhaps that was the issue with the modem test.

Sorry, what's power cycle the modem mean? I'm assuming you mean unplug it to shut off, hook pc right up to it, than turn it on? Not sure why this would help as I haven't changed anything (settings) on my pc yet. Thx

From what is being shown, everything works but dns. If you look at the other PCs that you say are working, are the DNS address the same on those system as they are here.

Has someone enabled some security on your modem about say, 2 months ago?

No. Modem not touched. Actually, 4 machines were working fine off that modem then only 1 wasn't.

Everytime you change the device attached to the modem (like from the router to the PC for a test), you MUST turn off power to the modem. The modem remembers the MAC address of the attached device.

Ok, just powered off pc, unplugged modem, connected pc directly to modem, turned on pc, waited for complete startup then powered modem back on. Again saw very good connection but neither browser worked - same as before. Any other ideas?
