Linksys WRT160N Wireless randomly "hangs" for 5-10

See title. I recently had this computer moved downstairs, away from the router. Now it's connected through the WUSB600N USB Network Adapter. Prior to this I don't remember any problems with the internet running on wireless computers, or any problems with the internet on wired computers. But now internet activity stops for 5-10s every 30s which is really bad for me as I am a gamer.

(Keep in mind I'm not very familiar with networking terms)

Through Control Panel, it shows the signal as Very Strong, 270mbps. "Network Type" is "Access Point", and it's 802.11g. Through the "Linksys EasyLink Advisor" (some flashy software that comes with the router), it says that I'm on 802.11b (weird). Also have 271mbps as well. If it matters, whenever I view a networking map my computer is always connected with a dotted line instead of a solid line, though I'm assuming that's because my router is hooked up to the network through this computer?

We're also using WPA2 TKIP/AES instead of WEP. I think that was changed recently, dunno if that would be a problem since I hear WPA2 is supposed to be more secure

As for the router itself, recently changed the "Radio Band" to "Wide" which almost doubled my signal strength. On channel 1. WPA2 TKIP/AES as stated (control panel detects it as WPA2 AES, Linksys as WPA1 TKIP). Maybe this software just sucks... Router firmware is at 1.02.4-CA (Canadian) whereas the official US firmware is at 1.02.2. Should I try "downgrading" or using third party firmware?

Anyways, I'm at a loss here. Will appreciate any input

Thanks!

Re: Linksys WRT160N Wireless randomly "hangs" for 5-10

Try this from the wireless machine.

Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.

The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:

If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.

Copy/paste that link here.

Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.

Re: Linksys WRT160N Wireless randomly "hangs" for 5-10

site's down for a bit

i tried "downgrading" the router firmware (1.02.4-CA to 1.02.2) and i'll try changing the security key "method" to WEP and see if that works...

Re: Linksys WRT160N Wireless randomly "hangs" for 5-10

sorry

http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2428333

it also seems to happen at every minute on the dot

first it started at every x:51 then moved to x:35

is it also normal to be running on 802.11b

Re: Linksys WRT160N Wireless randomly "hangs" for 5-10

I have the same router and I had some of the same problems. My internet would go out roughly every hour for about 10 minutes. I tinkered and messed with everything I could find. I was given one piece of advice that totally fixed it, funny enough. Go into your router, under wireless, advances wireless settings.

Second option should be frame burst.
Disable it.

That changed my router completely and fixed all of my problems. Hope that helps you. :)

Re: Linksys WRT160N Wireless randomly "hangs" for 5-10

Before you move to DD-WRT, have you done all of the following?
  1. For wireless connections, change the channel on the router, I like channels 1, 6, and 11 in the US.
  2. For wireless connections, try moving either the wireless router/AP or the wireless computer. Even a couple of feet will sometimes make a big difference.
  3. Update the firmware to the latest version available on the manufacturer's site.
  4. Reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure.

Many times these measures will resolve a lot of intermittent issues.

Re: Linksys WRT160N Wireless randomly "hangs" for 5-10

Sorry that didn't help. :( That's what did it for me. I flashed up, turned that off and it worked like a charm. If you check out Linksys' forum there's a lot of people having problems with that router and a ton of different fixes, depending on the issue. You could take a look there and see if it helps. :)

Re: Linksys WRT160N Wireless randomly "hangs" for 5-10

i've been recommended to ditch the usb adapter and stick to a pci card

just wondering what i'm looking for exactly? i have some "intel pro 100ve network connection" but i doubt that'd suffice
