Network Timeout on lots of sites

I'm constantly getting Network Timeout errors on sites like Microsoft, msn etc.Using Windows XP with a cable modem and ethernet connection.I can still get a lot of sites(maybe half).I've tried turning off firewalls, rebooting modem, changed ethernet cable, running various anti-virus programs and fixes(like Winsock)all to no avail.Any ideas?

Re: Network Timeout on lots of sites

Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.

The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:

If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.

Copy/paste that link here.

Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.

Re: Network Timeout on lots of sites

Well, that looks good, so it's not the connection, at least not at that time.

I'd start thinking that maybe it's the ISP DNS servers, that could be an issue.

Let's try replacing your DNS server. Follow the instructions at OpenDNS for Windows and configure to use OpenDNS for your DNS server. See if that makes a difference.

Re: Network Timeout on lots of sites

I replaced the DNS server with Opendns as suggested but it didn't make a difference.I also tried updating to SP3 from SP2 from a site I could connect to but got an error saying "access denied" about half way through the install.Might be related to the problem but I don't know.

Re: Network Timeout on lots of sites

That's not good that it bombed in the middle!

I think I'd consider trying SFC: SFC Tutorial
