small home network help!
hopefully this is the correct place for this post...
i have a dsl modem through TDS, i have a netgear router, and 2 computers. I'm trying to run both computer off of these. i have both computer plugged into the router, then the router plugged into the modem, then modem into the phone line.. anyways, my computers internet works about 90 % of the time, sometimes i have to reset the router, but otherwise it is good.. my other computer has a hard time. it gets hooked and unhooked for PS3 and the laptop. the laptop keeps saying it does not have a correct ISP addres.. it comes up as 000.000.000 usually when i reset the router they both work..for awhile...but not today... i need help! what should i be doing so BOTH computers are working properly on the internet? Thanks |

Re: small home network help!
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.
Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Make and exact model of the broadband modem. Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit). Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device. Connection type, wired or wireless. If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2) Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc. The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc. Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.
On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this: Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt: Type the following commands: PING 206.190.60.37 PING yahoo.com NBTSTAT -n IPCONFIG /ALL Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: small home network help!
have you tried going to start>run type "cmd"
ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew Almost everytime my connection says "limited or no connectivity" I run those commands and it usually takes care of it but you might be having problems with the DHCP settings in your router. Login to your router and check the settings... make sure your IP range is large enough to accommodate all your network devices.

Re: small home network help!
Open your browser and type 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1... one of those should work for your netgear router.
Username: admin Password: password and there should be a LAN IP Setup (depending on the model?). It will give a range. If you have never logged into the router before or changed anything then the settings should be fine but just make sure the range is large enough to accommodate all your network devices (PCs, PS3s, XBOX360s, etc.). ex. 192.168.1.2 through 192.168.1.10 would give you a range large enough to connect upto 9 devices.

Re: small home network help!
well the lan ip address which is the 192.168.0.1 then below that is the IP subnet and that is just 255.255.255
and below that is the dchp server, starting ip address is the 192 #, then the ending IP is the same # but ends in 50... ? i'm sooo confused and i can add ip address and MAC addresses...but i dont know either of those for my other computer |

Re: small home network help!
what model router do you have?? It should be labeled on the bottom.
The range looks fine. Did you try running cmd and doing the ipconfig /release & ipconfig /renew? You shouldn't have to worry about adding IP addresses or MAC addresses in your router settings.

Re: small home network help!
wierd... doesnt make sense to me. Only one of the PCs are having the problem so I dont think the DHCP is faulty.
Try resetting the Winsock Click start then run and type "netsh winsock reset" Click OK and restart the PC also try upgrading the firmware on your router... http://kbserver.netgear.com/release_notes/D102341.asp looks like there are a few DHCP updates
