Modem to PC Disconect from Internet..

Hey everyone im having trouble with my modem that is directly connected to the computer with no routers... I will just randomly disconect sometimes the connection will be good for 2 hours sometimes it will only be good for 15 minutes its very unpredictable...

I have a brandnew vista quad core computer equipped with 4gb of ram and 500gb of hardrive and a upgraded 256 mb graphics card so no issues there
I have disabled my fire wall
i have tryed just about everything from restarting my computer to replacing cable and ethernet wires but im still disconecting.. its very hard surfing the web, gaming and chating to friends when i get discoencted its really pissing me off

Here are some pics

Re: Modem to PC Disconect from Internet..

What type of modem do you have? From the pics it looks like you have a Scientific Atlantic. What isp do you have also? If you have a scientific atlantic modem then you probably have cox as you isp. I'm willing to bet that it is a intermittent connection issue from the tap outside. Cox is notorious for it. I used to work for them, lol.

My System

Re: Modem to PC Disconect from Internet..

try going into the dos prompt

should be start>all programs and command prompt

in the dos box type

ping www.google.com -n 35

and let it go now depending on what u see hear might help you determine what it is. it could just be ur cable provider droppin the ball on this.

like at the time= it should be relatively low like 5-80ms if its higher ike 150+ or more then u may have a problem. also did any of the packets get dropped?

if so then somethings up with ur isp. call em up and complain lol

basically the time=30ms is the time it takes for ur computer to communicate with the google server 30ms = 30milliseconds so if ur gettin 1500 ms its taking 1.5 seconds to get the info back. thats not good

I second that. Try that and also here's a tip...disconnect the power from the modem and reconnect. Look at the cable or online light depends what modem you have on what the light will be labeled. When it gets steady go ahead and verify that you are connected by surfing a page or 2. Kind of keep tabs on the time that you are connected. Then the minute your connection drops call your isp and ask them what do they show for the modem uptime. Of course if you were able to stay connected for lets say 30 mins and then you call and the modem uptime is like 4 mins or if they even see it on the network then you know you lost the connection and they would need to schedule a tech.

Re: Modem to PC Disconect from Internet..

Hey everyone, thanks for the great tips! im glad to see ive gotten so many repsonses already... well i called up my ISP (Rogers, i live in Canada) and during the time i was takling to them they saw that my modem was disconecting every 5-10 minutes! They also said there doesnt seem to be a problem in my neighbourhood so they scheduled a technicain to come next week for free! I hope they can fix it this issue has been going on for years.. but recently it just has been doing it like crazy..

Today I opened up my modem to see if there was any lose wiring and there were a few scratches on the circuit board =/ maybe thats whats causing it, ill keep you all updated until i fix this problem

Re: Modem to PC Disconect from Internet..

Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.

The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:

If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.

Copy/paste that link here.

Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.
