Random Disconnects?
Hello,
let me start by saying I have had a horrible time with wireless networks for my PC. I have a PC downstairs and a PC upstairs (they are about 10 feet apart through the floor). The PC downstairs is connected to the router/modem. I recently bought a new gateway adapter (Realtek RTL8185). I installed it and everything was fine. Now my problem is every 3 minutes it disconnects, but then reconnects right back (this is bad news for online gaming). The speed is okay, but I have tried reinstalling and everything. This is so annoying and dissapointing. I always have trouble with this stupid wireless internet. I am connecting to the internet with Realteks program, and it also seems that window's default wireless internet program is also connected to my wireless internet. Tips? Tricks? Re: Random Disconnects?
Only a guess, but it could be a conflict, windows wireless wizard does a good job, so i would say uninstall the realtek software - it does usually say you must not run 2 at once. If that doesnt fix it im not sure, if you cant uninstall the realtek software (it may force itself in just to hold the drivers) then just tell it not to run, they usually have an option for this. If this doesnt work then you could tell me your exact network layout? im not quite sure from what you said. Thanks.

Re: Random Disconnects?
I was thinking of a conflict as well- I've tried just using the window's wireless network, but as soon as I connect with that, Realtek's program comes up. Very annoying. It also, sadly, does not provide a way to disable the program.
What do you not understand about my network layout? I am connecting to a router which is hooked up to a PC downstairs. (it now seems my wireless internet connection goes off and on every minute, if not every couple of seconds now...) |

Re: Random Disconnects?
So your network is like this:
Router --Wire-- Downstairs PC Router --Wireless-- Your PC? I was just checking incase you were runnign through ICS or something, which can cause problems. As for not being able to disable the realtek software - Can you uninstall it?

Re: Random Disconnects?
Edit, I am having major connection problems now.
It's horrible. I've tried uninstalling the program, but that removes the drivers as well. I reconnected which solved the problem. EDIT: I have successfully removed Realtek's network connection program. Let me wait a bit and see if I still have issues. Last edited by Arnack; 08-07-2008 at 03:26 PM. |

Re: Random Disconnects?
Ah, thats a bit annoying, okay...tell XP you want to use the realtek program, there should be an option. To stop windows configuring your connection, go to Network Connections>Double click your wireless connection>Click Properties>Wireless Networks Tab>Uncheck box that says "Use windows to configure my wireless connection". And that should enable realtek to take full control - and resolve conflict (if there is any).

Re: Random Disconnects?
Thanks Luk07. Sadly, that option is already unchecked, and Windows is still connecting to the internet.
Now, this is the same exact problem I had before with my Linksys gateway adapter. It works for a little bit, and then slowly dies. Right now, I am on my downstairs computer, my wireless computer cannot connect at all. I can't blame it on the router, because my laptop works fine, and I recently bought a new router. Ugh. EDIT: My wireless computer actually works now, but probably not for long. It's just pretty slow now. And it just died. Last edited by Arnack; 08-07-2008 at 04:18 PM. |

Re: Random Disconnects?
I think I'm just going to give the computer away, or try to sell it or something.
I just bought a router, so that can't be the problem. I bought a new gateway, that's not the problem, and I tried calling my computer manufacturer, and they won't help. It's weird, because the internet is working now, but it disconnect/reconnects, and then after 10 minutes it will just die |

Re: Random Disconnects?
might be compatibilty of your router with the realtek adaptor? See if there's a router update on the manufacturer's website. Worth a shot I guess. Also check the realtek website for any known issues with that adaptor.

Re: Random Disconnects?
Thanks for the reply. Sadly, the same thing has been happening with my other gateway adapter (that's why I bought a new one).
It's weird, my strength/speed is very low, and I am only about 10 feet away (with a wall in between). When I try to play an online game, interne just crashes though. When I surf on the internet, it seems just to disconnect/reconnect (and most likely, eventually die) EDIT: i've really had no problem surfing the web besides the random disconnect/reconnect. It's when I play a game when it disconnects. Last edited by Arnack; 08-07-2008 at 08:44 PM. |

Re: Random Disconnects?
Some things you can try here.
Many times these measures will resolve a lot of intermittent issues.

Re: Random Disconnects?
EDIT. I tried moving my PC. It worked. I had an "Excellent" signal and 54 Mbps. I could play my online games fine. After an hour or two, it slowly died. When I play an online game, my internet crashes, and I have to restart it.
It also kind of dies when I try to watch online videos. Last edited by Arnack; 08-08-2008 at 01:06 PM. |

Re: Random Disconnects?
I think you either have malware, wireless interference, or someone leaching off your wireless connection. If you don't use WPA encryption, now's a good time to upgrade.

Re: Random Disconnects?
Hi Guys ,
I have exactly the same problem with my wife Notebook. Poor web connection as well. It disconnect itself for the network and require a notebook restart before it can connect to the wireless network. Her notebook is running Vista home Premium Edition. It annoyed me as hell. Finally narrowed down to the few causes of the problem. She have Avg-antivirus and Malware protector programs running. Both are scanning incomming network information that make it so slow and intermittent loading of web pages. I think the two program are completing with each other on the CPU and system resources that crippled it. The internet connection improved after I uninstall the Adware blocker(malware). The web page loading improves immediately. So I think if you need to install a virus scanner or protector only install one in each operating system. In you install many type, choose only one to protect your system. Next that does not fix the inter disconnect form the wireless router. Eventually I found out that the intermittent occurs when the notebook is on it own power supply. When it is on main supply and is charging the connection is always good. This leads me to the conclusion that that the wireless adaptor consume a lot more power than what the battery can provide. (this is especially true as some of the wireless adaptor driver allow user to set the transmiting power) So to test out my theory, please connect your notebook on the main supply to see if the wireless connection improve. Cheers |

Re: Random Disconnects?
I've almost solved this problem
In the RealTek Driver and utility software, select Avanced Tab/Energy saving, then select Max. I think this must be a temperature and/or energy issue. After doing this, the problem was 95% solved, not totally because I get just one disconnection in two days. This is very good comparing with the 20 or more disconnections in a single day I think this is the solution. |

Re: Random Disconnects?
You people need to start your own thread if you have an issue.
Note that this thread is six weeks old, I doubt the original poster is coming back. Closed.
