I have one pc and one laptop connected to a lan and the internet by a netgear router DG834G.
The laptop is wireless connected and I have no problems with the internet access at all. The pc can be connected either with cable to the router or by wireless. It does not matter which I use the internet access drops after any undefined time. If I reboot the pc it is once gain fine for a while. I have had this pc working in the past but unfortunately i cannot remember what I did just before this problem ocuured. I can ping all the ports on the lan also my primary DNS server can anyone shed any light on this?? ps .I am using XPPro on my pc and XP Home on my laptop |

Re: internet access drops out after a few hours
When the PC is working, then again when it fails, please do the following steps.
Try these simple tests. Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt: In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key: IPCONFIG PING <computer_IP_address> PING <default_gateway_address> PING 206.190.60.37 PING yahoo.com Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Paste the results in a message here. <computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. <default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: internet access drops out after a few hours
If the pings are all successful when the Internet is "out", then you have a local issue of some kind on the desktop. My top suspect would be malware.

Sorry to hear about your problems .. feel free to visit us anytime for more advice .. if you are doing a re-install of your windows operating system and have any problems pop into the other forum for Windows help ..
I have always found that being prepared for trouble somehow prevents it .. so poking good old murphy in the eye .. good luck with your re-install
