Virus in Wireless?

A friends' Toshiba laptop was recently cleaned of the Antivirus 2008 virus. He connects at home on a Netgear wireless network. He has been unable to stay connected for longer than a couple of seconds and in addition, while his wireless adapter is on, nobody else can get on the network while his machine is on. Once he turns his off, all is back to normal.

Thought it was his network. Brought his machine over here to my wireless network, it jammed all the other connections. None of my computers could get on while his was on.

Anybody got any idea what's going on and how can I fix it?

doesn't sound like it was completely cleaned from the virus, seen a few with that virus & they are really tough to clean if you're not used to doing that sort of thing. You also run the risk of infecting PC's on YOUR network.

ah. I've kind of been assigned the task of cleaning...I looked at his hijackthis log and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Maybe I'll mosey on over to the virus help, but if anyone over here can elaborate on TxTazDad's comments, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks so much!!!

Please follow the instructions here (5 pages) and then post all the requested logs in a new thread here for the security analysts to look at. If you have any trouble running any of the scans, leave them and move onto the next.

The security forum is always busy, so please be patient and you will receive a reply as soon as possible. If you go to Thread Tools > Subscribe at the top of your new thread you will receive an email as soon as a reply is posted.

someone else on the forum had the same virus and exact problem. You need killdisk to preform a low level format before reinstalling windows.

Thanks Johnwill, I have already performed much of that anyway and I don't have wireless capability. I can read a HijackThis log and did my best.

Lazareth, can you point me to the thread? Pointing me to killdisk is like handing someone a shotgun to take out a beesnest.

I'm sure I will be told if I'm contradicting forum policy, but I would always suggest formatting as a very last resort. I know I've cleaned 95% of all the infected PC's I've had to deal with & it CAN be done, I would suggest following John's advice before formatting (IMO)

I'd followed John's instructions already and never got a response in the log forum. I retreived my thread from page 6 and posted again, but I'm sure it's a timewaster.

Well if you read the thread linked in my last post, you can see that the thread starter had already reinstalled windows and the virus survived. That's why I suggested the low level format to make sure it gets removed before reinstalling windows.

I would not have suggested the low level format otherwise.
